{"id":561670,"date":"2026-07-22T00:50:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T00:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/561670\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T00:50:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T00:50:09","slug":"high-prices-to-squeeze-families-cash-bank-of-ireland-warns-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/561670\/","title":{"rendered":"High prices to squeeze families\u2019 cash, Bank of Ireland warns \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Families face an \u201cunwelcome squeeze\u201d on their cash as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/07\/20\/oil-prices-rise-back-above-90-as-iran-hits-tankers\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/07\/20\/oil-prices-rise-back-above-90-as-iran-hits-tankers\/\">surging oil prices<\/a> sparked by the US-Iran war drive up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cost-of-living\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cost-of-living\/\">cost of living<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bank-of-ireland\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bank-of-ireland\">Bank of Ireland<\/a> warns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Its forecast comes as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-iran-conflict\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-iran-conflict\/\">Middle East conflict<\/a> worsens, threatening further <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/energy-costs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/energy-costs\/\">energy price hikes<\/a> likely to hit Irish households.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Inflation will rise by 3.1 per cent this year and 2.7 per cent in 2027, while oil prices remain high as a result of the hostilities, according to the bank\u2019s economic forecast published on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Households face \u201can unwelcome squeeze\u201d on their incomes from higher inflation this year and in 2027 as a result, say the bank\u2019s economists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/conall-mac-coille\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/conall-mac-coille\/\">Conall Mac Coille<\/a> and Patrick Mullane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Bank of Ireland bases its forecast on a likely cost of $86 a barrel for Brent crude, one of the benchmarks for oil prices. That traded close to $89 a barrel on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Oil topped $120 a barrel during the conflict\u2019s initial phase but fell to $70 after talks between the US and Iran began, following a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/strait-of-hormuz\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/strait-of-hormuz\/\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, through which  about one-fifth of the world\u2019s oil is shipped, closed again when the sides resumed attacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a further threat to shipping, Iran-backed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/houthi\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/houthi\/\">Houthi rebels<\/a> in Yemen say they will close the Red Sea and  attack vessels unloading at Saudi Arabian ports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/2026\/07\/21\/iran-backed-houthis-expand-conflict-with-red-sea-blockade-will-fuel-prices-climb-higher\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran-backed Houthis expand conflict with Red Sea blockade. Will fuel prices climb higher?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Electricity and gas price increases of up to 11 per cent announced by Irish energy companies will start hitting household bills this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Bank of Ireland believes  people will pay these higher rates for energy until late into the first half of next year, when its economists estimate they could be gradually reversed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish people pay more than most other European consumers for electricity and natural gas, EU statistics show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Families \u201cappear to be cautious in their spending\u201d and are increasing the amounts of cash  they save, the bank says. Households had \u20ac175 billion on deposit with their banks in May, 5.8 per cent more than during the same month last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, Irish consumers increased spending by 2.9 per cent in the first three months of the year as their incomes grew strongly, say Mac Coille and Mullane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish workers earned a total of \u20ac37 billion in the first quarter of the year, almost 6 per cent more than during the same period in 2025, they calculate.
