Parmigiani Fleurier (PF) continues its exploration of \u201cmysterious complications\u201d with the Tonda PF Chronographe Myst\u00e9rieux, a fully functional and surprisingly legible chronograph that is indistinguishable from a normal three-hand watch \u2014 until it isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Pressing the conveniently placed chronograph monopusher summons a chronograph on demand, fully equipped with central minutes and hour totalisers, which disappears just as easily. Despite being one of the most ambitious chronographs on the market, it is priced relatively accessibly, at least in steel.<\/p>\n

Initial thoughts<\/p>\n

At first glance, the Chronographe Myst\u00e9rieux is nearly indistinguishable from a normal three-hand watch, unless you spot the pair of rose gold hands secreted under the mean time hands. Depressing the chronograph button at eight o\u2019clock causes these, along with the sweep seconds hand, to fly back to zero and being timing intervals up to 12 hours.<\/p>\n

The concept is not unlike that of the Maurice Lacroix Memoire 1, little-known halo piece that debuted in 2007 for EUR300,000. The Chronographe Myst\u00e9rieux would work the same way without its hour and minutes hands, but their presence ensures the user can still read the time when the chronograph is running.<\/p>\n

The result is a highly legible dial, enhanced with an almost excessively fine grain d\u2019orge guilloch\u00e9 that, like the undersized 18k gold hour markers, gets out of the way of the hands. At launch, PF offers two variants of the Chronographe Myst\u00e9rieux \u2014\u00a0 a regular production version in steel with a soft blue dial, and a limited edition in platinum with a frosted, bare platinum dial.<\/p>\n

While widely reported as being an \u201cin-house\u201d movement, PF has confirmed our suspicions that the Chronographe Myst\u00e9rieux\u2019s cal. PF053 was not made by Vaucher, PF\u2019s sister company, but by an unnamed third-party specialist.<\/p>\n

That might help explain the relatively accessible price of the Chronographe Myst\u00e9rieux, which is just CHF32,000 in steel with a platinum bezel. Even the platinum model, at CHF99,600, sits below the entry price for TAG Heuer\u2019s Vaucher-powered Carrera Split-Seconds Chronograph<\/a>, despite the former\u2019s platinum bracelet and more upmarket positioning. In short, Vaucher\u2019s work is good, but also quite expensive.<\/p>\n

Now you see it<\/p>\n

The Chronographe Myst\u00e9rieux is the crown jewel in PF\u2019s \u201cmysterious complications\u201d collection, which kicked off back in 2022 with the Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante \u2014 a watch with a second time zone that is only there when needed. The Minute Rattrapante followed in 2023, approximating the functionality of a timing bezel, but again, only when needed.<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, the latest and most ambitious take on the mysterious complications concept was also the first, and the impetus for the line \u2014 PF CEO Guido Terreni pitched the concept to founder Michel Parmigiani during his first year on the job, back in 2021.<\/p>\n

A clever chronographe<\/p>\n

The cal. PF053 is elaborate even by the standards of chronographs, with two rattrapantes, two horizontal clutches for the hour and minutes totalisers, and a vertical clutch for the dual-purpose sweep seconds hand.<\/p>\n

In time-only mode, the rattrapantes keep the hour and minutes totalisers in lockstep with the hour and minutes hands while the seconds hand circles the dial. Pressing the chronograph button at eight o\u2019clock declutches the seconds hand before a set of hammers sends all three chronograph hands to 12 o\u2019clock before the clutches reengage to drive the chronograph hands forward.<\/p>\n

The thumb-actuated position of the monopusher is especially ergonomic, as it puts your strongest digit against the button for an effortless feel.<\/p>\n

A second press of the chronograph button applies the brake and declutches the hands, bringing the timing trio to a halt. A third and final press frees the hour and minutes hands, which zero into alignment with the current position of the primary hour and minutes hands.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the vertical clutch reengages, allowing the elapsed seconds hand to reprise its secondary function as a running seconds indicator. Notably, since the seconds hand does not return to where it would be had the chronograph not been used, it isn\u2019t a reliable means of tracking the watch\u2019s timekeeping or keeping time to the second.<\/p>\n

Despite its ambitious concept, the cal. PF053 is only 6.9 mm tall, which is impressively slim considering many normal automatic chronographs are similar in height and some are even taller.<\/p>\n

In addition, it manages bidirectional automatic winding from a centrally mounted 22k gold rotor and a nearly weekend-proof 60 hours of going. The assortment, however, with a non-free-sprung balance paired to an Etachron-style regulator<\/a>, doesn\u2019t measure up to the brand\u2019s usual standards. It is the most obvious hint, other than the price, that this movement is not a Vaucher product.<\/p>\n

The movement finishing is orderly, with straight-grained bridges and machine-cut bevels. The revealing architecture is similar to that of past PF movements, but overall the detailing takes a back seat to the calibre\u2019s technicality.<\/p>\n

A familiar format<\/p>\n

While the functionality of the Chronographe Myst\u00e9rieux is indeed quite mysterious, the crowd-pleasing format is anything but. The Tonda PF was launched in 2021 to mark the brand\u2019s 25th anniversary, repackaging PF\u2019s classic Toric design language in a modern, integrated bracelet package.<\/p>\n

While the Toric\u2019s fluted bezel is still present, if reduced to a single tier of fluting, the model\u2019s arched lugs have been mostly absorbed into the case, cloaking the ergonomic monopusher. As a result, the Chronographe Myst\u00e9rieux wears like a large bracelet, \u00e0 la the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And while the bracelet lacks the substance and burliness of a modern Royal Oak bracelet, or even that of the Rolex Land-Dweller<\/a>, both case and bracelet are finished in a manner that\u2019s commensurate the price tag.<\/p>\n

That said, the bracelet terminates in a generic butterfly clasp that lacks the sort of micro-adjustment capability that both Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin<\/a> have introduced recently. This is the kind of shortcoming that becomes more pronounced each year as the rest of the industry upgrades its clasp hardware.<\/p>\n

Despite the Tonda PF\u2019s elegant aesthetic, this is still PF\u2019s take on the sports watch and as such is resistant to 100 m with a screw-down crown.<\/p>\n
