That\u2019s the promise of MAGIC, a miniaturized magnetometer built at Imperial College London, soon to fly aboard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Enabling_Support\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/Technology_CubeSats\/HENON\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ESA\u2019s HENON CubeSat mission<\/a> in 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, space weather monitors sit at the Sun\u2013Earth L1 point, about 1.5 million km away. For the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techexplorist.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cmes-extreme-previously-thought\/35520\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fastest coronal mass ejections<\/a> (CMEs), this gives forecasters barely 15 minutes\u2019 warning. HENON will push ten times farther upstream, around 15 million km from Earth, sampling the solar wind much earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor Jonathan Eastwood, presenting the work at the Royal Astronomical Society\u2019s National Astronomy Meeting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ras.ac.uk\/news-and-press\/research-highlights\/nam-2026-uk-built-instrument-could-vastly-improve-space-weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">explained<\/a>: \u201cI am really excited to be working on the HENON mission because it paves the way for a dramatic improvement in our ability to respond to severe space weather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solar storms can be disruptive for satellites, GPS systems, communications, and even power grids. The magnitude of this effect varies depending on the orientation of the CME\u2019s magnetic field, which can be measured directly only as it propagates through space. MAGIC will collect those magnetic field measurements soon, which may give warnings for two or three hours earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The instrument will fly alongside two others from Czech and Finnish teams, together testing whether earlier, more accurate forecasting is possible.
