Its lowest-frequency channels can sense emissions from roughly 6 to 20 feet beneath Io\u2019s crust, while higher frequencies probe shallower material.<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/photojournal\/nasas-juno-peers-beneath-ios-surface\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">[2]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The instrument does not directly place thermometers at those depths. Researchers derive the temperature profile from microwave brightness measurements and modeled electrical properties of Io\u2019s surface material.
