They were originally slated to lift off on a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Vulcan Centaur rocket but have now been assigned a SpaceX <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39779-falcon-heavy-facts.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39779-falcon-heavy-facts.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39779-falcon-heavy-facts.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Falcon Heavy<\/a>, according to a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/blogs\/sunrise\/2026\/07\/13\/nasas-sunrise-mission-changes-launch-vehicle-to-spacex-falcon-heavy\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/blogs\/sunrise\/2026\/07\/13\/nasas-sunrise-mission-changes-launch-vehicle-to-spacex-falcon-heavy\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NASA mission update<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-67b787a8-85e7-11f1-957d-e3f11af3572a-2\">SunRISE will fly to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space<\/a> as part of a rideshare mission sponsored by the U.S. Space Force&#8217;s (USSF&#8217;s) Space Systems Command (SSC). Though it&#8217;s not stated specifically in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a> release, that may be a hint as to why the mission&#8217;s rocket was changed. On its most recent launch, USSF-87, Vulcan experienced an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/deja-vu-vulcan-centaur-rocket-powers-through-significant-performance-anomaly-on-satellite-launch\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/deja-vu-vulcan-centaur-rocket-powers-through-significant-performance-anomaly-on-satellite-launch\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/deja-vu-vulcan-centaur-rocket-powers-through-significant-performance-anomaly-on-satellite-launch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">anomaly in one of its solid rocket boosters<\/a> \u2014 the second such incident to occur during the rocket&#8217;s four launches to date.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-67b78942-85e7-11f1-a9cb-39ede38c0052\">Vulcan succeeded in delivering the USSF-87 payload to its designated orbit on that launch, but the recurrence of the booster issue during ascent prompted the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/us-space-force-history-mission-capabilities\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/us-space-force-history-mission-capabilities\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/us-space-force-history-mission-capabilities\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Space Force<\/a> to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/us-space-force-pauses-national-security-launches-on-ula-vulcan-rocket-due-to-booster-glitch\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/us-space-force-pauses-national-security-launches-on-ula-vulcan-rocket-due-to-booster-glitch\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/us-space-force-pauses-national-security-launches-on-ula-vulcan-rocket-due-to-booster-glitch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pause national security launches on Vulcan<\/a> until it could be addressed. Which mission SunRISE will be manifested on has not yet been released, but SSC has already <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ssc.spaceforce.mil\/Newsroom\/Article\/4439687\/ussf-prioritizes-gps-iii-capability-delivery-timeline-executes-launch-provider\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.ssc.spaceforce.mil\/Newsroom\/Article\/4439687\/ussf-prioritizes-gps-iii-capability-delivery-timeline-executes-launch-provider\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">shifted other launches<\/a> between Vulcan and SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Falcon 9<\/a>, so NASA&#8217;s change in rockets for SunRISE could indicate either that the mission has been remanifested on a different SSC rideshare, or that another SSC mission has been shifted from Vulcan entirely.<\/p>\n<p>SunRISE is a heliophysics study under the NASA Science Mission Directorate&#8217;s &#8220;missions of opportunity&#8221; umbrella and is part of the Explorers Program run by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/goddard-space-flight-center.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/goddard-space-flight-center.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/goddard-space-flight-center.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Goddard Space Flight Center<\/a> in Greenbelt, Maryland. It consists of six small satellites, each about the size of a mailbox. The mini-constellation&#8217;s mission is led by scientists at the University of Michigan and will be managed out of NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16952-nasa-jet-propulsion-laboratory.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16952-nasa-jet-propulsion-laboratory.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16952-nasa-jet-propulsion-laboratory.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jet Propulsion Laboratory<\/a> in Southern California.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>The half-dozen smallsats will be delivered to an orbit about 22,000 miles (35,000 kilometers) above <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a> \u2014 just above a geostationary parking altitude \u2014 and fly in a giant 10-mile (16-km) &#8220;X&#8221; formation, each extending its roughly 10-foot (2.5-meter) antenna booms to act as a single large radio telescope to track solar radio bursts. These kinds of bursts travel faster than the energetic particles from a solar storm, and precede their arrival when shot towards Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Powerful solar storms, like the one that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/sun\/earth-was-just-hit-by-the-strongest-solar-radiation-storm-in-over-20-years-heres-what-it-means\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/sun\/earth-was-just-hit-by-the-strongest-solar-radiation-storm-in-over-20-years-heres-what-it-means\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/sun\/earth-was-just-hit-by-the-strongest-solar-radiation-storm-in-over-20-years-heres-what-it-means\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hit Earth in January<\/a>, are <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/science\/a-worst-case-solar-storm-could-knock-out-satellites-gps-and-power-grids-report-warns\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/science\/a-worst-case-solar-storm-could-knock-out-satellites-gps-and-power-grids-report-warns\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/science\/a-worst-case-solar-storm-could-knock-out-satellites-gps-and-power-grids-report-warns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">capable of disrupting<\/a> or disabling satellites by interfering with onboard electronics, sensitive instruments and communications systems. Instead, scientists will use data collected by the spacecraft to improve prediction models for impending <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-weather\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-weather\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-weather\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space weather<\/a>, which in turn could lead to mitigation plans to better thwart the effects of such solar events on orbital infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Falcon Heavy is <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a>&#8216;s heavy-lift launch vehicle, capable of launching up to 58,860 pounds (26,700 kg) to geostationary transfer orbit. It&#8217;s a triple-booster rocket that consists of three modified Falcon 9 first stages, and has launched 12 times since it debuted in 2018. Four of those have delivered national security payloads to orbit, with the most recent of those, USSF-52, launching in December 2023. Falcon Heavy&#8217;s most recent flight overall occurred this past April, when it sent the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-falcon-heavy-rocket-viasat-3-f3-launch\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-falcon-heavy-rocket-viasat-3-f3-launch\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-falcon-heavy-rocket-viasat-3-f3-launch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Viasat-3 F3 telecom satellite to orbit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Falcon Heavy&#8217;s next mission will lift off with NASA&#8217;s Nancy <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Roman Space Telescope<\/a>, currently set for no earlier than Aug. 30.
