Dublin model Sarah Morrissey has defended her accent against hateful commentary.<\/p>\n
The former Miss Ireland<\/a> and successful model and content creator has been shamed for her accent, having grown up in the Liberties,<\/a> and said that she has been told to “speak properly” during certain media opportunities. Over the course of her modelling career,<\/a> Sarah said that negative comments she receives are always related to the way she speaks.<\/p>\n She shared that commentators will say that they have to watch her content on mute due to her accent, or things like “gorgeous, until she opened her mouth.” Responding to a social media <\/a>comment, Sarah said that her accent represents the strength of the community she comes from.<\/p>\n Sarah explained that until her career in the public eye, she never even thought she had an accent. While she expressed gratitude for her opportunities, the mother-of-one never felt that she deserved her career any less than someone else.<\/p>\n “I never thought I deserved any less or any more than anybody else. And do you know why? Because another thing the inner city has is we have deadly mas” she said. “I had a ma who told me when I was growing up I could do anything I wanted to do. I couldn’t just be a model, I could be a supermodel. ‘Sure, of course, love, you can do that. Why can’t you?’<\/p>\n “We have mas that think we can do no wrong, especially the sons, but that’s for another video. We also have the best friends in the whole world. Mine, from junior infants, never once were jealous about what I did, how I looked, you know, the things I got, and vice versa. They big you up in everything you do.<\/p>\n “We have the best community. I had neighbours who would be going to mass and they’d pop in a magazine cover in the door that they saw me in. They never begrudged anything that you did. And they would always take you down a peg if you’re too big for your boots!” she said.<\/p>\n Dublin model Sarah Morrissey. Image: Instagram @sarahmorrisseymodel\n<\/p>\n Reflecting on how her accent has helped and hindered her, she recalled one of her earliest experiences of accent shaming when she won the Miss Ireland title in 2006.<\/p>\n “When I first won Miss Ireland, when I went for my first TV interview, I was told to speak properly. I’ve had loads of comments over the years,” she said. “The truth is, has my accent made it hard for me to do certain jobs? Probably. You know, it’s no surprise that I would love to do TV or radio, be a presenter. So has it hindered me in any way? Possibly.<\/p>\n “But also, has it helped me? I’m sure it has. It’s made me more memorable. You know, it’s gotten me into the room for some people. When I walk out of the room, they’ll remember me. And for a long time, I was the only person in the room with the accent that I have. I was the only model for a long time on the catwalks or the shows who spoke the way that I do. But all that has changed, and I hope in some small way I’ve been a little bit of a part of that.”<\/p>\n Sarah added that people would never make comments about a man’s accent, and that the criticism she receives “screams of misogyny.”<\/p>\n “I don’t want a girl or anyone growing up that’s watching this that speaks the way that I do thinking that there’s something wrong with how we talk. And I’m sure there’s so much psychology behind why people troll or send messages like this, but I’m convinced it’s because you didn’t have a ma who told you you were deadly, or friends to big you up and love you no matter what, or a community that was behind you, because you wouldn’t send messages like this.”<\/p>\n “And I just think if we all acted the same, looked the same, or sounded the same, it would be very boring.”<\/p>\n Want to see more of the stories you love from Dublin Live?
