It is a Tuesday morning in January. I am stumbling out of a horrible outpatient’s appointment in Holles St hospital. In an attempt to compose myself before leaving the hospital, I droop down into a chair in the corridor coffee station. I am low-key crying and I know by the weight of my head that my colour is off. I sit here for a moment breathing and holding on to the chair. Something happens then. An atmospheric twitch. A cup of tea has been placed on the table in front of me. I look around and see a staff member arrive back to the counter. She has moved her attention on to the next thing and is not looking back at me.<\/p>\n

Eleven years later I am still thinking about this act. At the time, in the hospital, it gave me great comfort. But in the years since it has come to haunt me. It won\u2019t go away. Some part of this fixation is related to a skewed kind of envy. This gesture was executed with exquisite perfection. Contained in this beautiful offering is everything I have been trying to do in the past twenty something years of being an artist, and maybe double that of being a human. I am not yet finished learning from this woman, whoever she is.<\/p>\n

I can’t be bothered making a distinction between hospitality and creativity. It all comes from the same burst pipe.<\/p>\n

In my work, I tell myself that I am trying to create opportunities for shared connection. For me, a creative practice is getting from one end of our existence to the other with a flourish. It is the story of how we survive the thing, scratched onto surfaces. Dispatches issued to those we might never meet. This is an output that cannot be contained. Something we can’t not do. We are burst pipes. This messy vital essence dripping, leaking, spraying is proof of our humanity. It spills outwards from us and trespasses onto the paths of others. These intersections might be our finest work. Here is fizzy, vibrant, thrilling, full-of-life LIVING. Here at these thresholds, we implicate ourselves into the stories of those around us. We risk entanglement. We do it anyway (sometimes). This mesmerising tangle of connections might be our main masterpiece.<\/p>\n

\"N\/A\"<\/p>\n

This woman eleven years ago was compelled to place a cup of tea in front of me. She interrupted my despair and beguiled me back into the collective effort of survival. She gifted me with recognition. She noted my suffering, offered a salve and went about her business wanting nothing in return. With this creative gesture, she splashed me with her humanity. It has soaked into me and I am different now.<\/p>\n

We have come to associate the word hospitality with fussy clattery landscapes and the gaudy C\u00e9ad M\u00edle F\u00e1ilte of marketing campaigns. If we detach it from the word industry, we are left with a beautiful system which humans on every corner of the earth have created for allowing people they do not know into their villages. It is an ill-advised rush of love for a fellow human. An ancient strategy for suspending suspicion. Hospitality is formed on the basis of a temporary agreement of trust formed with a stranger.<\/p>\n

A non-allergic reaction.<\/p>\n

It is crossing one another\u2019s thresholds, interrupting the time and space of those around us in interesting ways, filling our days with possibility. I can\u2019t be bothered making a distinction between hospitality and creativity. It all comes from the same burst pipe. So yes, for the semantically inclined, the gesture of the cup of tea placed wordlessly in front of me was a work of art but it never asked to be, which makes it better still. Philosopher Jacques Derrida says you can never do pure hospitality because the laws of society prevent it. Well Derrida, eleven years ago an unknown woman in a hospital cafeteria proved you wrong.<\/p>\n
