Fire services have been tackling gorse and grass fires in several other counties, including in Cork, Laois, Kildare and Dublin.”

He said that once a fire starts in these types of areas, it can be very difficult to access them.

“If a fire starts on the bottom of a hill it will accelerate rapidly uphill.

Firefighters say that if a fire starts at the bottom of a hill it can accelerate rapidly uphill

“It’s really difficult to get water. This area is not served by hydrants. It is very difficult to actually challenge the fire, so you go for indirect tactics, either creating fire breaks or bringing in helicopters and doing an aerial attack,” he said.

Species impact

In Kerry, Killarney National Park lost some 22 hectares due the wildfires which started a week ago.

Divisional Manager at Killarney National Park Eamonn Meskell said there was a lot of damage but the damage could have been a lot worse.

Not only did they lose some habitats, they also lost animals and birds which were dependent on the habitats – some of which will take decades to return.

Among the animals and insects that have been affected are deer and bees.

“We found the honeycombs which were fried by fire and the honey had melted, and the combs themselves had burned. So that was impacted,” Mr Meskell said.

Read more: ‘Significant wildfire’ remains active on Slievenamon – Coillte

“In June the red deer and the Sika deer have their fawns, and the fawns are hidden in secret places in the heather in the woodlands.

“We do have hares and they have their leverets and they wouldn’t be able to get away from a fire when it’s raging, and we had a raging fire,” he added.

Among the species lost are frogs, spiders and ground nesting birds like curlew, skylark and lapwing.

They also found duck eggs that had been destroyed.

“Specific species like the purple hairstreak butterfly – that whole cycle of that generation would have been destroyed in the area impacted by the fire.

“As well as that, we have lizards. I have seen the lizards on the mountain looking to bury themselves in the wet moss that wasn’t there – because the fire had it destroyed and dried up and the habitat was gone.”

Staff at the Wicklow Mountains National Park have warned of the continued risk of wildfires after habitat loss…

[2
61,60,43
post-565404","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ireland","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-news
["GET
