href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ireland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ireland<\/a> targeting dissident republicans intercepted an \u201cextremely significant\u201d bomb that was being transported in a vehicle near the border.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Members of the Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na\u2019s special detective unit stopped the vehicle travelling on the N2 south of Carrickmacross, County Monaghan on Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Garda\u00ed then requested the assistance of the Irish Defence Forces EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) team, which completed an examination of the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">It is understood the device found contained suspected military grade explosives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Garda sources have described the bomb as \u201chighly sophisticated\u201d and \u201cadvanced\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The vehicle\u2019s driver, a woman in her 20s, was arrested at the scene and remained in Garda custody on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Another suspect, a man in his 40s, has since been arrested and is being held at a Garda station in the Dublin area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Garda commissioner Justin Kelly confirmed details of the operation as he spoke to media at a Garda graduation event in County Tipperary on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cTo be clear, what we found was an extremely significant seizure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cSo this was an explosive device.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Kelly added: \u201cAny seizure of this nature is really concerning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cHowever, we certainly know that there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2023\/feb\/23\/republican-dissidents-lurk-in-the-shadows-hoping-to-be-noticed\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a small minority of dissident republicans <\/a>who did not agree with the Good Friday agreement, they did not put weapons and explosives [out of use], they didn\u2019t, you know, go through with the proper process in relation to decommissioning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cSo that is something that we continue to deal with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThere\u2019s a small minority of these individuals, I would describe them as radicalised republicans, and this is a threat that we\u2019re going to continue to face for some time in An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cWe work very closely with our colleagues in PSNI [Police Service of Northern Ireland] and the intelligence services in the UK to deal with this threat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cBut I want to commend the members of An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na who are involved in this
