Search and rescue teams have recovered a person who went overboard from a ferry in the Shannon Estuary this morning. <\/p>\n

The incident occurred on the Tarbert to Killimer ferry. It is understood the person fell overboard shortly after 9am and was in the water for up to two hours. <\/p>\n

The Coast Guard Rescue 117 helicopter from Waterford, the Ballybunion Sea and Cliff Rescue Team and several units of lifeboats and local yachts, took part in the search operation. <\/p>\n

A spokesperson for the RNLI Kilrush Lifeboat Station, Co Clare confirmed to the Irish Independent that a casualty has been recovered from the water and that an RNLI search is still operational at this moment.<\/p>\n

Garda\u00ed also confirmed that they are \u201cassisting emergency services at the scene of an incident near Tarbert, Co. Kerry\u201d.<\/p>\n

The condition of the passenger is not yet known, but they have been transported to University Hospital Limerick for treatment. <\/p>\n

The ferry journey usually takes about 20 minutes to cross the Shannon Estuary.<\/p>\n

Fine Gael chair of Kerry County Council, Michael Foley, said that the Tarbert-Killimer ferry is very popular among locals on both sides of the estuary.<\/p>\n

“There’s two ferries running there every half hour during the summer. It’s hugely busy there then.<\/p>\n

“There’s a number of people from this side working over in Moneypoint in Clare who would be using that as well. Kerry Co-Op milk trucks use it to go across to Clare to collect milk.”<\/p>\n

He added: “You never hear of anything happening on it, ever.”<\/p>\n
