Albeit their championship campaign is just one-hour old, this was a result to potentially shape Carrigaline\u2019s entire season.<\/p>\n
Their path out of the group phase now requires only one more win, not the expected two.<\/p>\n
Go further again. Should they overcome both Mallow and Douglas in the weeks ahead, Micheal Meaney\u2019s charges are in with a shout of locking down the No.1 seeding and direct progress to the last four.<\/p>\n
If that all carries the waft of looking too far down the road too quickly, well, that\u2019s what happens when you rock up to Ballinhassig on the opening night and hold the county champions to three scores across the final 30 minutes.<\/p>\n
Carrigaline have earned the right to dare and dream of a seismic autumn.<\/p>\n
At the very least, they\u2019ll find their way to a second successive quarter-final appearance. Impossible not to from such a powerfully confident start.<\/p>\n
Backed by a noteworthy breeze, the Barrs turned around 1-10 to 1-7 in front. That\u2019s where we\u2019ll pick matters up from.<\/p>\n
A Rickey Barrett mark and Steven Sherlock free from outside the arc, interrupted only by a \u00c9anna Desmond white flag, stretched a three-point interval lead out to five.<\/p>\n
It should have been more. Barrett\u2019s white flag should have been green. After Brian Hayes won his second throw-in of the evening and Barrett claimed possession inside, his goal shot was taken off the line by Br\u00edain Murphy.<\/p>\n
Even though they were hemmed in for much of the third quarter thereafter and frazzled in their final quarter chasing, the Barrs will still have their regrets. A large portion of those regrets should centre on what they didn\u2019t do after establishing this 1-13 to 1-8 lead on 34 minutes.<\/p>\n
After Desmond closed the gap to four, Sherlock sent wide a two-point free well within his radar. Two more wides followed in close pursuit from Cillian Myers Murray.<\/p>\n

Instead of potentially doubling their advantage, they wouldn\u2019t score again for 15 minutes.<\/p>\n
Carrigaline executed a tight grip on proceedings by dominating the skies and the ground.\u00a0They did to Darragh Newman\u2019s kick-out what the Barrs had done to Sean Mellet\u2019s in the opening half.<\/p>\n
Following three converted Carrigaline frees for a 1-14 to 1-13 lead on 43 minutes, two of which were orange from Niall Coakley, Newman went short to Sam Ryan at the edge of the arc. The Barrs worked possession through the lines, the play ending with a Brian Hayes point attempt falling short.<\/p>\n
The champions needed to go short more regularly. They were starved of primary possession and the ability to reassert themselves in this contest. The press from the white shirts of Carrigaline cut off several future short outlets.<\/p>\n
Brian O\u2019Driscoll and \u00c9anna Desmond were so intelligently terrorising the Barrs defence. Their darting into pockets delivered back-to-back points and a 1-16 to 1-14 lead on 52 minutes.<\/p>\n
The Barrs response was a superb Brian Hayes run, looping handpass into the large parallelogram, and a Thomas Egan fisted goal.<\/p>\n
The lead lasted no length at all. Carrigaline hadn\u2019t come this far to break and bend. Kevin O\u2019Reilly fetched the ensuing restart, Callum Barrett fired over an instant equaliser.<\/p>\n
The everywhere \u00c9anna Desmond conjured white and orange for a three-point lead. A shock was certain. Brian Hayes rattled the crossbar in the first minute of injury-time to so nearly rewrite the result.<\/p>\n
Carrigaline’s second-half control of possession was assured and superb. They operated as streetwise Premier Senior veterans, not a crowd only two seasons back up.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s been an incredibly difficult few months off the field for the club. Here was a result and performance to bring a large and welcome smile.<\/p>\n
For the champions, who are without Billy Hennessy and Ethan Twomey for their title defence, the road to back-to-back has been immediately elongated.<\/p>\n
