The European Union has announced more meetings on artificial intelligence as both China and the United States forge ahead with developing the technology.<\/p>\n
Antonio Costa, the president of the European Council, has confirmed he and his team are planning dedicated sit-downs on AI during the forthcoming summits in October, November and December.<\/p>\n
The meetings will be held under Ireland\u2019s European Council presidency, though all of the summits are likely to happen in Brussels.<\/p>\n
According to\u00a0Politico, however, it remains unclear as to what exactly EU leaders are likely to specifically talk about during these meetings.<\/p>\n
Brussels is losing influence on artificial intelligence internationally, with both its efforts to develop and regulate the technology falling behind the United States and China.<\/p>\n
American tech firms continue to lead the way when it comes to developing frontier AI models, with Anthropic\u2019s Claude Fable 5 and OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT 5.6 models opening up security vulnerabilities for European firms that lack complete and all-encompassing access to similarly powered models.<\/p>\n
China is meanwhile poaching the bloc\u2019s status as the global digital regulator, with Beijing launching a new initiative on controlling AI over the weekend.<\/p>\n
The World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization was officially founded in Shanghai on July 16, with the new international regulatory organisation already boasting 29 members \u2014 most of which hail from the global south.<\/p>\n
Speaking at its launch during a major tech conference in the city, Chinese President Xi Jinping insisted that China was interested in pushing AI development in a manner that was open source and available to all nations.<\/p>\n
\u201cAI development should not be a solo performance by a single country, but a symphony of international cooperation,\u201d Xi said, in what analysts have interpreted as a jab at the United States.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe should jointly oppose overstretching the national security concept in the field of AI or placing one country\u2019s security over that of others.\u201d<\/p>\n
