{"id":567369,"date":"2026-07-25T09:59:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-25T09:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/567369\/"},"modified":"2026-07-25T09:59:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-25T09:59:09","slug":"irelands-first-financial-literacy-ambassadors-appointed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/567369\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland\u2019s first financial literacy ambassadors appointed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ireland\u2019s first financial literacy ambassadors have been appointed.<\/p>\n<p>Gr\u00e1inne Griffin is director of financial education at the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, a new division established in July 2026, and was a senior manager with the Citizens Information Board.<\/p>\n<p>She holds a bachelor of social science from University College Dublin, and diplomas in law and employment law from the Institute of Public Administration and the Law Society of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"360\" width=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ireland-s-first-financial-literacy-ambassadors-appointed.jpg\" alt=\"T\u00e1naiste Simon Harris speaks to the media outside Government Buildings in Dublin\" data-title=\"Cabinet meeting\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Wire\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Wire\/PA Images\" data-credit=\"David Young\" data-usage-terms=\"\"\/>T\u00e1naiste Simon Harris said the ambassadors \u2018will act as trusted, accessible voices\u2019 (David Young\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>Denis Carrigan is the president of the Association of Teachers of Home Economics, and is a home economics teacher at St Laserian\u2019s Special School, Co Carlow.<\/p>\n<p>The roles aim to increase awareness and understanding of financial matters to Irish citizens.<\/p>\n<p>The move is part of an EU-wide financial literacy campaign in which the European Commission has asked EU countries to appoint between one and three financial literacy ambassadors.<\/p>\n<p>There is no remuneration for the roles, as set out by the European Commission, although expenses for travel and other necessary costs \u201cmay be provided\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The appointments were made \u201csolely at the discretion\u201d of the Minister for Finance.<\/p>\n<p>T\u00e1naiste and Finance Minister Simon Harris said Ms Griffin and Mr Carrigan will bring \u201cpassion, expertise and energy\u201d to their roles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone deserves the opportunity to make the best of their money, whatever their circumstances,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether its managing day-to-day finances, planning for major life events or investing for the future \u2013 having the confidence and knowledge to make informed financial decisions can make a real difference.<\/p>\n<p>    We want people to feel empowered to save and invest, and to have access to trusted information that helps them make choices that are right for them<\/p>\n<p>            T\u00e1naiste and Finance Minister Simon Harris<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we prepare to introduce the new Investment Account, building financial literacy and confidence has never been more important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want people to feel empowered to save and invest, and to have access to trusted information that helps them make choices that are right for them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur ambassadors will act as trusted, accessible voices who will help promote the tools, knowledge and supports available to improve financial literacy, while also encouraging a broader conversation about the importance of financial wellbeing across society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look forward to working with them as we continue to improve financial literacy, strengthen financial resilience and help more people build a secure financial future.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Ireland\u2019s first financial literacy ambassadors have been appointed.
