Peter O’Mahony was not alone in believing he should have faced a harsher sanction.

There was frustration in the second-half, too, when Quinn Tupaea escaped a sin-bin for a deliberate knock-on which prevented Tadhg Beirne from barrelling towards the NZ tryline.

Even Andy Farrell, normally so tight-lipped on issues such as these, admitted his frustration with a third decision – the call to blow the final whistle early with Ireland chasing a try bonus point in the dying stages.

Some of those calls were more divisive than others, but ex-referee Nigel Owens believes Jacobson, in particular, was hugely fortunate not to be sent off for his dangerous hit on van der Flier.

Owens calls out Ireland v New Zealand call

Nigel Owens ran the rule over the final weekend of Nations Championship games down under on his World Rugby YouTube series Whistle Watch with Jamie Roberts.

There was plenty to analyse from an officiating point of view when it came to Ireland’s meeting with New Zealand at Eden Park.

The discussion on the Ireland v New Zealand game begins around the 7-minute mark, and Owens did not hold back with his disapproval of Luke Jacobson escaping harsher sanction for his clearout on Josh van der Flier.

“The main factor here is that they felt there was mitigation,” Owens said.

What they felt was that when the guy was coming in – now, I don’t like this action. This action, diving off your feet into a contact situation, should not be…it’s dangerous, and this is what can happen. Idon’t like that. That’s not allowed, that shouldn’t be happening in the first place.

What they felt was he was going to make a legal clearout. If you look, there’s an Irish player on the wrong side [?] who’s actually getting out of the way. That contributes to what the next action of the New Zealand player is. For that reason, they feel that this yellow card is correct, because of that mitigation.

Personally, I think he’s very lucky. For me, he’s always illegal. I am not seeing that dive with his arm tucked back here as anything which you would naturally do to clear out.

Personally, myself, I would go a 20-minute red card for this.

One would hazard a guess you’d find few Irish fans who would disagree with Nigel Owens’s judgement. It certainly seems as though Jacobson was a lucky boy, especially when the incident is compared to Tadhg Beirne’s 20-minute red card in Chicago last year.

Owens also commented on the controversial intentional knock-on by Quinn Tupaea, and again said that New Zealand had massively gotten away with one.

When you’re going to go with a dive like that or whatever you do with one hand to try and get hold of the ball, it’s a high risk to this.

You get it right, you get the ball back…great, you play on. You get it wrong, and then you’re looking at a sanction.

In this instance here, they quite rightly so deemed it to be deliberate because he didn’t get the ball back. There is, if you look at it…there is a chance maybe you could have got that ball back. But, because you run that risk and you didn’t get it back, then it’s deemed to be a deliberateknock on and a penalty.

There was a clear line break here. If he doesn’t dive…that’s out and the Irish are all the way up towards the opposition try line.

It should have been through with the yellow card, because it’s a clear opportunity for Ireland which is taken away by that deemed-to-be illegal action.

Few would argue that Ireland would have been deserving winners against New Zealand based on their performance at Eden Park, but it seems fair to say that they were seriously hard done by two massive refereeing calls.

Nigel Owens has added his voice to the many who believed Ireland were hard done by refereeing calls…

[2
61,60,43
post-567575","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ireland","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-news
["GET
