A Letterkenny taxi driver has voiced his concerns over the ability of the new Bonagee Link<\/a> resolving one of the town’s busiest traffic chokepoints.<\/p>\n

Shaun Gallagher, who runs Letterkenny Cabs, believes that the Bonagee Link could make things worse in Ballyraine, which is already a traffic congestion hotspot.<\/p>\n

Gallagher, posted a video on Facebook, where he offered a very measured opinion on the new Bonagee Link – which some are heralding as the solution to Letterkenny’s persistent traffic problems.<\/p>\n

However, Gallagher is sceptical of the project having reviewed the plans, and believes it may create an even bigger bottleneck.<\/p>\n

“I don’t want to be disingenuous to the people that secured the funding, and planned the project. I just don’t think it’s going to be the gamechanger that people think due to the fact of where it’s coming out.<\/p>\n

“From the drawings that I looked at, it’s coming out between Arena 7 and Top Spares – but that area is already a bottleneck, and it’s going to become an even bigger bottleneck,” said Gallagher.<\/p>\n

Gallagher said that holidaymakers coming from the North would come over the Bonagee Link and still come through Ballyraine, and said if they approached from the other way the same thing would occur.<\/p>\n

He also highlighted the issue facing workers at Vertiv leaving the job at 5pm.<\/p>\n

“If I’m coming out of my work in Vertiv at 5pm, and heading back across the border, because we know a lot of the employees live in the North and travel to Letterkenny for work, then I’m coming onto the Ballyraine roundabout at the creameries.<\/p>\n

“You have another issue up the road then at the Optum roundabout. That is already chock-a-block going up the way, it’s brutal and then coming down you can very easily get caught again.\u00a0It’s not the silver bullet people think it is, primarily due to the fact of where it’s coming out,” said Gallagher.<\/p>\n

Gallagher also added that he thinks if the road from Woodlands to the Mountain Top became part of the project then that could ease some traffic congestion across the town.<\/p>\n

“The decision to reduce lanes at Ballyraine isn’t going to help at all. In fact, you can see all those factories and financial services companies in 10 years time emptying out.
