Now, as a national priority, the country has its eyes on becoming a global quantum technologies leader. Its Quantum 2030 vision, first launched in 2023 and now entering the implementation phase, articulates a bold set of actions that are aimed at making Ireland an internationally competitive quantum hub for research, innovation, and collaboration.

Ireland is not alone and the race for quantum leadership is well underway. Governments around the world including the United States, Australia, India, China, and the European Union are investing heavily in research, infrastructure, and commercialization. Quantum technologies promise breakthroughs in computing, simulation, sensing, communications, and cryptography that may transform almost every industry.

The prize for nations that succeed in quantum innovation includes economic advantages, scientific influence, and geopolitical relevance. This clear opportunity is not lost on the political, business, and academic sectors of Ireland and they’re now fully committed with a plan to becoming a serious player in a set of profoundly disruptive technologies.

Is Ireland Ready To Make A Quantum Leap?

The Republic of Ireland has credentials that make it an ideal environment for success in quantum technologies. It already has an impressive track record in fundamental quantum science and technologies such as photonics, electronics and nanofabrication.

The country also hosts a rich portfolio of international and local technology companies in many of its major cities including Dublin, Cork, Galway, and Limerick. Over the past few decades, leading Silicon Valley firms including Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Apple have established significant operations and made Ireland a top destination for technology investment, talent, and innovation.

Dr. Méric Kucukbas, RD&I Technologist with IDA Ireland, focusing on developing Ireland’s quantum industry.

IDA

Dr. Meric Kucukbas, a quantum technologist with Ireland’s investment promotion agency, the Industrial Development Authority (IDA) Ireland, credits the country’s mature technology industry ecosystem and its density, many research and development labs, a talented workforce, and deep collaboration across public and private stakeholders, as some of the factors that make it a strong candidate for quantum innovation leadership.

In addition, Kucukbas believes the government’s proactive role in making available investment funds and other economic incentives, easing visa applications for foreign talent, and fostering the growth of educational opportunities and talent that range from scientific to skilled trades, is playing an outsized role in helping to build Ireland’s quantum industry.

Ireland’s Strategy For Quantum Technologies

Building and sustaining a new industry is never a trivial undertaking. Worse yet, amplifying the challenge is having to create a new national industry with a set of technologies that are still being invented. Although quantum technologies have achieved important technical breakthroughs, large-scale commercial opportunities are only beginning to emerge.

Analysis by McKinsey, the management consulting firm, suggests that the promise of quantum is now finally ready to start to be unleashed by the end of this decade and into the 2030s, and by 2035 it may create up to $2.7 trillion of economic value worldwide.

Ireland wants to be ready and able to participate in that opportunity. By 2030, the vision is for the country to be an internationally competitive hub in quantum technologies.

To get there, their strategy called Quantum 2030 is built around five pillars.

Pillar 1: Support fundamental and applied quantum researchPillar 2: Develop a pipeline of talent necessary to support the diverse needs of the industryPillar 3: Contribute to and learn from national and international collaborationPillar 4: Stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship in quantum technologies and related areasPillar 5: Build awareness of quantum technologies and real-world benefits to a broad range of stakeholders across society

Launched in 2023, the vision is now beginning implementation with a recently published plan. It documents specific actions and projects that will take place in the months ahead, the necessity of collaboration with national and European partners, and the plan’s critical role relative to other national priorities.

Framework for Ireland’s Quantum 2030

Government of IrelandDelivering Ireland’s Quantum Vision

For stakeholders across government, industry, and academia, Ireland’s quantum strategy isn’t just another technology initiative. It’s a serious undertaking to position the country as a global hub for a set of technologies that will likely redefine the future.

However, even with significant advantages, there is a lot of work ahead. For example, the country doesn’t yet host its own operational quantum computers, although Kucukbas says that delivery of the first of several machines is imminent.

In addition, while Ireland’s technology startup scene is dynamic, mature, and well-supported, there are relatively few new home-grown quantum technology companies. In many countries this is not unusual, as quantum technologies require skills, software, and hardware, that are materially more complex than traditional software-based companies where anyone with a basic PC or Mac connected to the Internet can quickly hammer out a new app.

As the technology advances and the commercialization opportunities become more obvious, that’s sure to change. Ireland’s Equal1, for example, which is developing a rack-mountable quantum computing system, is demonstrating what’s possible with the right vision, talent, and support.

Ireland Wants A Quantum Advantage

Kucukbas says that at the heart of Ireland’s quantum strategy is future relevance and economic success. If the nation is going to continue to grow and prosper, it must attract new investment and build and support industries that will sustain valuable organizations and provide good-paying jobs.

Near-term metrics on quantum success will include the volume of research taking place, the number of national and international collaborations, the generation of new intellectual property, and increasing economic output.

Quantum leadership will not be determined by ambition alone. It will depend on sustained investment, talent development, commercialization, and execution.

Ireland believes it has the ingredients to compete. Over the next few years, the world will learn whether that belief translates into a lasting quantum advantage.

As nations compete for leadership in quantum technologies, Ireland is betting that strategic investment and innovation today will…

[2
96961,61,239828,60,43,3404
post-568342","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ireland","tag-ida","tag-ie","tag-industrial-development-authority","tag-ireland","tag-news","tag-republic-of-ireland
["GET
