Disgraced former Kilkenny hurler DJ Carey<\/a> has been hospitalised, we can reveal.<\/p>\n

Carey (54), who is serving a five and a half year jail sentence for defrauding almost \u20ac400,000 from over 20 people while pretending to have cancer<\/a>, was taken to Dublin\u2019s Mater Hospital with a health issue this week.<\/p>\n

Prison officers escorted Carey from Mountjoy Prison<\/a> to the Mater, where he is undergoing treatment for a health issue.<\/p>\n

It is understood he was scheduled to stay at the hospital for a number of nights.<\/p>\n

Prison officers are required to remain with Carey for the duration of his time at the hospital.<\/p>\n

Carey\u2019s hospitalisation comes over eight months on from his imprisonment for crimes which shocked the nation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dublin\u2019s Circuit Criminal Court heard that the former GAA All-Star defrauded in total \u20ac394,127 and $13,000 US dollars from his victims over a period between 2014 and 2022.<\/p>\n

Some \u20ac44,200 has been repaid, leaving \u20ac349,927 and $13,000 US dollars outstanding.<\/p>\n

He was sentenced after pleading guilty to who counts of dishonestly inducing others to pay money to him after fraudulently claiming to have cancer.<\/p>\n

A further eight charges of dishonestly inducing others to pay money and two counts of using a false instrument with the intention of inducing another to accept it as genuine were taken into consideration by the court.<\/p>\n

Carey, with an address before the court of The Drive, Newtown, Maynooth, Co Kildare, told the victims that he had cancer and needed money as he was undergoing treatment in Seattle.<\/p>\n

Imposing sentence last year, Judge Martin Nolan said Carey \u201ctook advantage of people’s good nature and goodwill towards him\u201d.<\/p>\n

The judge said this was a \u201cvery low fraud\u201d and Carey’s behaviour was \u201creprehensible\u201d and \u201cvery serious\u201d. He said Carey promised to repay money, but \u201che knew at the time he could never repay the money\u201d.<\/p>\n

Judge Nolan said the injured parties \u201cmust have looked in mirror and said ‘how foolish am I?’\u201d<\/p>\n

But he said they were \u201cgood natured people\u201d who had lost money and possibly some of their faith in other people.<\/p>\n

The judge noted Carey was \u201cone of best known hurlers ever\u201d whose reputation has been destroyed. He noted the mitigation included Carey’s guilty plea and co-operation with gardai.<\/p>\n

One of those Carey pleaded guilty to defrauding, publican and devout GAA fan Noel Tynan, who lost \u20ac10,000, told RTE\u2019s Prime Time that he welcomed the conviction.<\/p>\n

“Everybody else has to pay for their crimes if they get caught,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
