Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige returned to San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday to unveil the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including an all-stars-on-deck plug for its coming crossover event \u201cAvengers: Doomsday.\u201d <\/p>\n

In an interview with film personality Brandon Davis after the presentation, Feige addressed<\/a> the comparisons that fans have made between the narrative build-up to \u201cDoomsday\u201d and that of the previous \u201cAvengers\u201d films, \u201cInfinity War\u201d and \u201cEndgame.\u201d <\/p>\n

Before \u201cInfinity War\u201d was released, the film\u2019s main antagonist, Thanos, had made several short appearances across prior Marvel movies, teased as an all-powerful villain that Marvel\u2019s superheroes would inevitably face off against. In contrast, Doctor Victor von Doom, the main antagonist of \u201cDoomsday,\u201d has only been seen in last year\u2019s \u201cThe Fantastic Four: First Steps,\u201d featured in a brief, over-the-shoulder cameo. Feige addressed the comparison by suggesting that fans are remembering Thanos\u2019 prior appearances as being more consequential than they actually were.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe \u2018Thanos build-up\u2019 has built up in people\u2019s heads over the years,\u201d Feige said, before listing off some of the villain\u2019s appearances prior to \u201cInfinity War.\u201d \u201cHe sat on a chair at the end. He pulled a gauntlet out and said, \u2018I\u2019ll do it myself.\u2019 And he yelled at Ronan, [the villain of \u2018Guardians of the Galaxy\u2019], on a video screen briefly. And that was kind of it. I remember memes making fun of Thanos for just sitting in a chair. \u2018All he does is just sit on a chair.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Feige argues that \u201cDoomsday\u201d will comfortably establish Doctor Doom, similarly to how \u201cInfinity War\u201d was Thanos\u2019 proper introduction to viewers, many of whom weren\u2019t savvy to his cameo appearances. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we got to \u2018Infinity War,\u2019 we said, \u2018This is really the introduction of Thanos to people.\u2019 That\u2019s how that movie was built. That\u2019s what we\u2019re doing with Doom. \u2018Doomsday\u2019 is an introduction and the story of Doom,\u201d Feige said. \u201cIt is very much for audiences that know and love him from the comics, and audiences that haven\u2019t any clue who he is yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even though \u201cAvengers: Doomsday\u201d will be headed by a villain that will be new to many viewers, that character will at least be played by a Marvel alum. Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play Victor von Doom, after previously playing Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, across several films over 11 years. \u201cDoomsday\u201d arrives in theaters Dec. 18. <\/p>\n
