Former presidents, current prime ministers and the kings of Britpop have been among those hailing Mayo\u2019s triumph in the All-Ireland football final<\/a> after 75 years of hurt<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Noel and Liam Gallagher, the Oasis brothers with deep roots in the county, kept their respective tributes short and sweet. <\/p>\n

Noel was quick to take to Instagram to post simply: \u201cFINALLY! UP MAYO.\u201d <\/p>\n

He wasn\u2019t as quick as his younger brother mind you, who got in first with his congratulations to the county, adding \u201click it up to Ras. Very proud\u201d to his post.<\/p>\n

The internet tells us that \u201click it up to Ras\u201d is a phrase borrowed from Jamaica and means \u201cto nail something brilliantly\u201d. <\/p>\n

The Gallagher brothers<\/a> spent much of the childhood travelling over and back from Manchester to Charlestown, where their mother Peggy was born and their grandmother Margaret still lived at the time.<\/p>\n

Former US president Joe Biden\u2019s post hailing the victory was less succinct than anything that came out of the Oasis brothers. <\/p>\n

\u201cFor the first time in 75 years, the Sam Maguire Cup comes home to Ireland,\u201d his Instagram account said in the hours after the final whistle blew.<\/p>\n

And I meant it. <\/p>\n

I said it because I know what it means not just the county of Mayo but to my own family\u2019s story. <\/p>\n

Biden said that he has expressed that hope not just because of what it would mean for the county, but because of what it would mean for his own family\u2019s story.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday the dream is becoming a reality. Congratulations to my friends in Mayo. You earned this victory. Enjoy every minute. Sam is coming home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Canadian prime minister Mark Carney added his voice to the celebrations and was among those who alluded to the fabled Mayo curse. <\/p>\n

Carney visited Mayo in June to visit Westport, the homeplace of his paternal grandparents as part of a two-day visit to Ireland. <\/p>\n

\u201cA proud son of County Mayo tonight. After 75 years, the curse is broken and the Sam Maguire Cup is coming home,\u201d he said on X as he reposted a clip from the Sunday Game showing the precise moment when the dream of generations finally came true.<\/p>\n

The clip was watched more than eight million times by Monday morning. <\/p>\n

The story of Mayo\u2019s triumph spread fast and far with many news outlets from all over the world sharing the story of the county\u2019s win and the funeral of 1951, the hexing priest and mythical curse that finally ended on the final Sunday of July 2026. <\/p>\n

Some well-known figures are even claiming a little bit of credit for Mayo\u2019s triumph, albeit in a tongue in cheek fashion.<\/p>\n

Gary Neville, the former Manchester United defender and current host of the wildly popular Overlap football podcast – which also features Roy Keane – is currently in Ashford Castle on the Galway-Mayo border.<\/p>\n

He posted a selfie on Instagram holding up a green and red jersey to a Sawdoctors soundtrack and the caption \u201cSo I come to Mayo for the first time and bring them luck\u201d. <\/p>\n

Who knew that was all that was needed to trump the 75-year-old curse. <\/p>\n
