A judge has said that it is “disappointing” that an Islamic State (IS) supporter who stabbed a garda will not engage in risk and psychological assessments.<\/p>\n
A sentencing date of 12 October has been set for Abdullah Khan, who pleaded guilty to stabbing a garda and setting fire to a pub owned by Conor McGregor.<\/p>\n
Khan, 24, whose address cannot be published because of a court order, appeared before the non-jury Special Criminal Court in Dublin.<\/p>\n
Sentencing has been repeatedly pushed back because of delays due to a lack of co-operation from Khan.<\/p>\n
Three judges were told that Khan had said that morning he was “not willing to engage” with a risk assessment.<\/p>\n
Ms Justice Karen O’Connor said she was “somewhat disappointed” as they had made it “very clear how important” the risk assessment would be to the court and his sentencing.<\/p>\n
She said they had hoped for progress and engagement “that would assist this court in relation to how we structure sentence with regard to Mr Khan”.<\/p>\n
“So it is disappointing to say the least.”<\/p>\n
His defence team also told the court that he was “not willing to engage” in a psychological assessment.<\/p>\n
Judge O\u2019Connor said that in circumstances where “we provided time and made it clear” how the court would regard a risk assessment, also provided time and put mechanisms in place to compile a psychological report to help court to structure sentence, she said it had become “apparent” Khan was “not willing to engage”.<\/p>\n
As a result, she said a final sentence would be handed down on 12 October at 11am and remanded him in custody until that date.<\/p>\n
Khan pleaded guilty to stabbing Garda Gary Lynch on Capel Street in Dublin city on 29 July last year; and to the arson attack on the Black Forge Inn, a bar owned by McGregor, days earlier on 25 July.<\/p>\n
Garda\u00ed said Khan shouted “Allahu Akbar” before stabbing the garda, and expressed support for the terrorist group calling itself IS during subsequent interviews.<\/p>\n
Khan\u2019s defence barrister previously told the court he had been in a “mental health crisis”.<\/p>\n
The court heard that he indicated during garda interviews that he was not a very stable person, had battled with mental health issues, and had been homeless for a period.<\/p>\n
