What a moment in time. Delighted. Absolutely delighted. 75yrs too long.’

After reflecting on the win overnight, Kilbane posted a heartfelt message on social media on Monday morning, congratulating the team and saying what it means to him and his family.

’75 years in the making with many living their whole lives without ever seeing this day. Like my father Patrick Farrell, born on September 27th 1951, only a few days after Mayo’s most famous All-Ireland win (until now). He passed away just over 10 years ago without ever seeing his beloved team get hold of Sam Maguire.

Kevin Kilbane at the All-Ireland final in 2016. Pic: Daire Brennan/Sportsfile

‘This means so much to everyone across the world with Mayo blood in their veins. To everyone who left in search of work and a better life. Whether they found it or not, most had a deep love for Mayo GAA which has been passed down through generations. I hope to do the same for my daughters even though I’m far away.’

Kilbane paid tribute to all of his family in the west of Ireland, including cousins across the island and the world, and his brother and sister growing up as proud Irish people, even though they grew up in England.

He concluded the message by saying: ‘To a county decimated with emigration for centuries but always having a love for home. This one is for its people. Mayo is one of the greatest places on earth with the greatest people of all. This one’s for Mayo people wherever you are in the world.’

A truly touching message from the son of an Irish emigrant, who never forgot his roots in the west of Ireland.
