{"id":570944,"date":"2026-07-27T20:02:16","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T20:02:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/570944\/"},"modified":"2026-07-27T20:02:16","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T20:02:16","slug":"uisce-eireann-to-tackle-biggest-repair-job-in-its-history-on-key-water-main-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/570944\/","title":{"rendered":"Uisce \u00c9ireann to tackle biggest repair job in its history on key water main \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/uisce-eireann\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/uisce-eireann\/\">Uisce \u00c9ireann<\/a> is preparing for the biggest repair job in its history this weekend when 300 workers will toil against the clock to fix a key pipeline to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a> in just 27 hours. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The company is making the most of the bank holiday exodus from the capital to tackle the work on the water main running between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ballymore-eustace\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ballymore-eustace\/\">Ballymore Eustace<\/a> and Saggart which delivers 220 million litres of drinking water to the city daily. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe August bank holiday is one of the quietest times in Dublin in terms of water usage,\u201d spokesman Colm Ward said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe All-Ireland is over, people are away on holidays and a lot of people leave the city for a few days. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe used the same period for major repairs last year and the year before and it worked well.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Unlike the current situation, however, a nationwide drought and hosepipe ban were not in place in those years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But Ward said the current restrictions had not prevented the filling of reservoirs around Dublin to ensure supplies are uninterrupted when the pipeline is shut down this weekend. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe water conservation order came into effect in Dublin earlier than the rest of the country and it did make a difference. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWater demand is back down to about 640-650 million litres daily from over 690 million when we issued the order and we have got the reservoirs as full as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/07\/09\/uisce-eireann-hit-with-31m-penalty-for-missing-performance-targets\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Uisce \u00c9ireann hit with \u20ac31m penalty over leaks and bad debtsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Apart from some possible localised loss of pressure in areas close to the pipeline, it is expected households and businesses will not experience any difference in their supply while the works are under way. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The water main is 25km long and sections have been in use since the 1940s.
