\n\tMarvel\u2019s buzzy Comic-Con presentation <\/a>put two huge comic book movie tentpoles on the studio\u2019s 2028 release calendar: \u201cBlack Panther 3,\u201d featuring the debut of David Jonnson as\u00a0T\u2019Challa II\/Toussaint,\u00a0and \u201cGhost Rider<\/a>,\u201d starring Ryan Gosling<\/a> in the title role. The announcement means \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New day,\u201d \u201cAvengers: Doomsday\u201d and \u201cAvengers: Secret Wars\u201d will be the only Marvel movies released in theaters between now and 2028. In fact, \u201cSecret Wars\u201d is the only 2027 Marvel movie release.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cA lot of it is a strategy we\u2019ve talked about for a while, of focusing on quality,\u201d Marvel Studios<\/a> boss Kevin Feige<\/a> told Empire magazine<\/a> at Comic-Con about the sparser release calendar. \u201cWe always try to focus on quality, but when quantity is so much, you get spread thin. We didn\u2019t want to be spread thin, and the Avengers is as important as it comes. And\u00a0\u2018Secret Wars\u2019\u2026 is a setup in and of itself to the future, to what\u2019s next. So really, it was landing those two movies and setting up 2028, of which we\u2019ve revealed two of them so far,\u00a0\u2018Ghost Rider\u2019\u00a0and\u00a0\u2018Panther III.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWith the television series \u201cVisionQuest\u201d arriving on Disney+ in October, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be getting a total of four new entries across two years. That\u2019s a massive slow down from the exhaustive output Marvel previously delivered across theaters and streaming. There were six Marvel movie and TV projects in 2023 alone, for instance. Feige previously admitted to Variety <\/a>that Marvel\u2019s \u201cover-expansion\u201d into Disney+ streaming content was the start of \u201cquantity trumping quality\u201d at the studio, which he now seems to be actively course-correcting.<\/p>\n

\n\tDisney\u2019s former CEO Bob Iger also cited <\/a>Marvel\u2019s push into streaming as a reason for its disappointing critical and commercial run across 2023 and 2024, explaining: \u201cThey had not been in the TV business at any significant level. Not only did they increase their movie output, but they ended up making a number of television series, and frankly, it diluted focus and attention. That is, I think, more of the cause than anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMarvel is now slowing down its output in an attempt to restore its quality. While the studio is currently developing a new take on the X-Men, the standalone movie\u2019s release date was not announced at Comic-Con. Feige told Empire<\/a> that Gosling\u2019s \u201cGhost Rider\u201d movie moved ahead after \u201cit was Gosling who had the vision. It was Gosling who had the pitch that won over Shawn, that had them come and pitch us this idea, which led to us on stage today.\u201d<\/p>\n
