There have also been a further 566,000 streams to date on RTÉ Player.

“The Mayo victory – and the response to it – shows just how much our national games mean to us as a nation,” said Declan McBennett, head of sport at RTÉ.

“On television, on RTÉ Player, on radio, online and on social, RTÉ’s coverage was exceptional across the board and a compelling example of the enduring role of public service media.

“The hurling fed our passion this year, and football rediscovered its soul. RTÉ captured every moment and served the nation brilliantly.”

The average audience was smaller than the 1.37m that watched Ireland’s FIFA World Cup play-off defeat to Czechia in March, which rose to 1.6m during the penalty shootout and was supplemented by 1.06m streams on RTÉ Player.

Last Sunday’s World Cup final attracted an average audience of 1m on RTÉ2 and 1.4m streams on RTÉ Player, while the England-Argentina semi-final brought in 949,000 on RTÉ2 and 1m on RTÉ Player.

However, the viewership for the All-Ireland football final exceeded the 898,000 average audience for Ireland’s win over England in this year’s Six Nations.

More than 1m watched as Mayo won the All-Ireland for the first time in 75 years. The audience for Up for the Match was 324,000 on television (38%) and 57,000 on streaming.

RTÉ’s social media coverage of the championship has seen a total of 6.7m engagements, 86.4m video views and 125m content impressions this summer.

Photo: (l-r) Jordan Flynn and Kobe McDonald.
