A LEGAL ROW is brewing in Northern Ireland over the cancellation of an event at\u00a0F\u00e9ile an Phobail, a community arts festival in west Belfast.<\/p>\n
Last week, the organisers of the festival announced they were pulling an event featuring a gender critical group known as the Women\u2019s Rights Network Northern Ireland (WRN NI).<\/p>\n
The cancellation has led to criticism, including from Harry Potter author JK Rowling, and the group has now initiated legal proceedings against the festival<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n What is the Women\u2019s Rights Network?<\/p>\n The Women\u2019s Rights Network is a registered company that describes itself as a group to promote \u201cthe human rights of women and girls\u201d that is committed to \u201cfree speech and to putting the sex based needs of women and girls first\u201d.<\/p>\n The limited company was incorporated in 2022 and is based in the town of Halifax in the north of England.\u00a0A map on its website<\/a> suggests it has dozens of branches across the United Kingdom, including around 15 in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n The \u2018about\u2019 section on its website<\/a>\u00a0contains various phrases and terminology associated with anti-trans groups and viewpoints.<\/p>\n It describes its members as \u201cadult human females\u201d, an exclusionary term used by the gender critical movement to refer to cis women.<\/p>\n The group also refers to \u201cbiological sex\u201d \u2013 a term that implicitly rejects gender as a social construct \u2013 and says that the \u201creality of biology\u201d that\u00a0sex is \u201cdetermined at conception\u201d and defined as being \u201cbinary, female and male\u201d.<\/p>\n There is no separate company under this name set up in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n A specific Women\u2019s Rights Network Northern Ireland group appears on social media, including a Facebook page<\/a>\u00a0that has not posted since 2022 and a more active page on X.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n Three members of the Northern Ireland group also appeared at a Stormont Committee in February 2025<\/a>\u00a0as part of a wider inquiry<\/a> into gaps in equality legislation in the region.<\/p>\n What event was due to be held at F\u00e9ile an Phobail?<\/p>\n WRN NI were due to host the event at F\u00e9ile an Phobail, which is held in Belfast annually and billed as Ireland\u2019s largest community arts festival.<\/p>\n This year\u2019s festival features a wide range of events from different types of groups, including community radio stations, historians, journalists and musicians.<\/p>\n Women\u2019s Rights Network said that its event, originally due to take place in St Mary\u2019s University College on the morning of 4 August, would feature contributors from around Ireland and Europe to \u201cdiscuss the reality of women\u2019s rights\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n The festival programme<\/a>\u00a0said the event would explore \u201cwomen\u2019s rights, law and legislative clarity\u201d, including \u201csex-based rights, single-sex spaces and fairness in women\u2019s sport\u201d.<\/p>\n It did not list any speakers, but\u00a0a poster for the event<\/a> featured the logos of The Countess, Athena Forum, Sex Matters, and Gaels for Fair Play<\/p>\n The Countess is an Irish-based anti-trans group founded by barrister Laoise de Br\u00fan that is critical of things like<\/a> gender self-identification, gender-neutral toilets in schools, and the participation of trans women in female sport.<\/p>\n Sex Matters is a UK-based advocacy group founded in 2021 by Maya Forstater, a researcher who says she lost her job<\/a> for claiming that people cannot change their biological sex.<\/p>\n Athena Forum is a European think tank which says it works to \u201csafeguard and advance sex-based rights\u201d and promotes critical debate on issues around gender identity.<\/p>\n Gaels for Fair Play is a group which campaigns against the inclusion of trans women in ladies\u2019 football and camogie.<\/p>\n Why was the event cancelled?<\/p>\n In a statement last Tuesday, F\u00e9ile an Phobail said it \u201cwas unaware from the initial submission that this event would promote campaigns against rights for the transgender community\u201d.<\/p>\n Statement from F\u00e9ile an Phobail pic.twitter.com\/mBvUqWGoDm<\/a><\/p>\n
