Emmerdale’s Dingle clan are united in devastation next week when Cain makes the difficult decision to put their beloved family dog Monty<\/a> to sleep. <\/p>\n

The family have known for a few weeks that the pet is terminally ill and have been trying to make the most of the time they have left with him.<\/p>\n

The situation is weighing particularly heavily on Cain, who feels that he and Monty are going through a similar journey with cancer<\/a>. So, it’s with a heavy heart and all the courage Cain can muster that he lets Monty go peacefully over the rainbow bridge.<\/p>\n

“Saying goodbye to Monty is one of the hardest moments of Cain’s life – he is utterly heartbroken,” explains our Emmerdale insider. “Not only is Monty their adored pet, but he’s an important link to their deeply missed patriarch, Zak. <\/p>\n

“Ever since they found out Monty had cancer and it was incurable, Cain has felt even more connected to the old boy. It’s one thing to know that putting Monty to sleep is the right thing to do, but quite another to face up to the reality of it.”<\/p>\n

Coping with loss is very much on Cain’s mind next week, as he and Moira prepare for a tricky conversation with his son Kyle Winchester.<\/p>\n

They want to ask the lad if he would be happy for Moira to adopt him following the tragic death of his mother Amy<\/a>. When Moira is called away to Nana Barton’s, Cain braces himself for the conversation with Kyle, and it’s not an easy one.<\/p>\n

“Cain and Moira don’t want to erase Amy from Kyle’s life – instead, it’s a way to solidify his family foundations in case tragedy strikes,” explains our spy.<\/p>\n

“Amy is sadly gone, and Cain is battling a life-threatening illness. If anything were to happen, Moira would want to step up as Kyle’s legal parent, but a plan like that is a lot for any young boy to get their head around.”<\/p>\n

While Cain is focused on Kyle, Sam is the one to spot that there’s something wrong when he notices an alarming change in Monty’s condition, and calls the vets.<\/p>\n

After examining the poorly pooch, Rhona Goskirk breaks the bad news that it’s likely his tumour has spread further, and it’s time to look at what’s best for Monty.<\/p>\n

While Sam and Belle are broken-hearted, it’s Cain who’s plunged into turmoil, unable to give up on Monty. However, his feelings change after he receives a message from beyond the grave. <\/p>\n

“It was Monty’s prognosis that helped Cain to make some big decisions about having life-saving cancer treatment down the line,” points out our source. <\/p>\n

“Monty has been such a massive influence on Cain, and such a comfort since Zak’s death, that it feels too difficult to let him go. But then Cain finds Monty asleep on Zak’s grave and realises what he has to do: he has to return Monty to Zak, where he belongs.”<\/p>\n

Although Cain feels it’s his place to be a tower of strength for the boys, it’s Kyle who finds the right tone for Monty’s goodbye. He encourages Cain to give Monty a proper Dingle send-off, something that helps them all in this dark hour.<\/p>\n

So as the family gather around Monty’s graveside to remember him and his beloved owner, Cain is the one trying to rally them with an emotional and heartfelt eulogy. Can he find the strength to carry on and fight for his future now Monty has been laid to rest?<\/p>\n
