An eight-year-old girl and her father had partial limb amputations following a serious road crash in Co Tyrone, a court has been told<\/p>\n

Brannon Mullan (36) from Shanmullagh Park, Draperstown, has been charged with causing grievous bodily injury to the father and his daughter by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice by attempting to burn his vehicle at the scene.<\/p>\n

He is further accused of driving after consuming excess alcohol, having an incorrect registration mark and failing to notify ownership of the vehicle.<\/p>\n

A police officer told Enniskillen Magistrates Court that on July 25, police received a report of a two-vehicle collision at Edergole Road, Omagh, and on arrival observed a white van with substantial frontal damage and a quad on its side.<\/p>\n

The father and child were lying on the road with obvious serious lower limb injuries.<\/p>\n

Mullan confirmed he was driving the van and failed a preliminary breath test.<\/p>\n

He was arrested and at this point witnesses told police a fire was lit in the front passenger seat of the van shortly after the collision.<\/p>\n

It is alleged Mullan drove through a crossroads and his van made contact with the quad bike, causing both vehicles to travel some distance before coming to a stop.<\/p>\n

The officer said: \u201cEven at that stage it was clear the victims had suffered life-changing injuries. Both have since had amputations. The man has had an amputation below his ankle and the child has had an amputation below her knee.\u201d<\/p>\n

The police officer objected to bail.<\/p>\n

A defence solicitor accepted this was a \u201ctragic incident\u201d but pointed out Mullan had remained at the scene and made no effort to flee.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe accepted being the driver of the vehicle in interview and breaching bail on the other matters, which was the first instance since conditions were imposed,\u201d said the defence.<\/p>\n

Urging bail to be granted, he submitted stringent conditions could be imposed to manage risk.<\/p>\n

Addressing Mullan directly, District Judge Alana McSorley told him, \u201cYou are currently on bail which you have breached consuming alcohol. You then made a further decision to drive while under the influence and as result of this incident there have been serious, life-changing injuries to both a child and her father. Your actions post-incident cause me concern and you face a charge of perverting the course of justice. I\u2019m not satisfied risks can be managed and bail is refused.\u201d<\/p>\n
