(Supplied: Biennale of Sydney\/Daniel Boud)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Donors were reported to have withdrawn, while the contract for an ambassador for the biennale&#8217;s philanthropic program, who was also vocally pro-Palestine, was terminated due to &#8220;operational constraints&#8221; following complaints to the biennale board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Amid further complaints artists on the program were anti-Semitic, the biennale offered to conduct a walk-through with NSW Jewish Board of Deputies President David Ossip ahead of the exhibition opening in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\"><a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/life-and-luxury\/arts-and-culture\/sydney-biennale-s-olive-branch-amid-anti-zionist-claims-20260203-p5nz44\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mr Ossip told the Australian Financial Review<\/a> he intended to &#8220;call out&#8221; any perceived lack of &#8220;balance&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/life-and-luxury\/arts-and-culture\/jewish-group-rejects-sydney-biennale-preview-offer-20260311-p5o9k8\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">biennale&#8217;s offer was rejected<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Then, on stage on opening night, American DJ Zubeyda Muzeyyen, who performs as DJ Haram, urged attendees to &#8220;oppose the Zio-Australian-Epstein empire&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Her comments were condemned by NSW Arts Minister John Graham, and resulted in accounting firm PwC dropping its sponsorship of the biennale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Her statements also led to a review by the biennale and a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-18\/nsw-police-probe-dj-haram-comments-biennale-of-sydney\/106468154\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106468154\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NSW Police investigation into whether she breached racial hate laws<\/a>. Police found there was &#8220;insufficient evidence to commence proceedings&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-10\/wendy-hubert-artist-pilbara-biennale-sydney-indigenous-art\/106377890\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">53hr drive to showcase Pilbara art in Sydney <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">From the Pilbara to Penrith, an Indigenous WA community has taken its prized cultural and artistic possessions across the country for the Biennale of Sydney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While Low would not be drawn on the specifics of the 2026 Biennale of Sydney out of respect for Al Qasimi, he describes the challenge for curators of navigating a charged political climate as a &#8220;global question&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Working and living in Manchester, we are also subject to a lot of very similar conversations that we have observed around the world, in particular America and parts of Europe,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;People pulling out, cancellations, the withdrawal of funding; it&#8217;s all part and parcel of working within an art institution in this day and age.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">For Low, what&#8217;s important is &#8220;protecting spaces for nuanced conversation&#8221;, often created by artists and contemporary art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We live in a world that doesn&#8217;t really give space for that,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a very quick-fire draw: Do you agree or not? If you&#8217;re not for me, you&#8217;re against me. That is such a difficult landscape to navigate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Low, who lived in Hong Kong during the 2014 pro-democracy protests, sees the biennale and other arts organisations and arts festivals as exactly to place to have difficult conversations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I still very much believe in the power of communities coming together to celebrate each other, regardless of ideology,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/listen\/programs\/critics-corner\/sydney-biennal-2026\/106437620\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Listen to 2026 biennale artist Cannupa Hanska Luger on ABC Radio National&#8217;s Critics Corner<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Cannupa Hanksa Luger is interested in ideas of Indigenous futurism, using that speculative fiction to speak back to the present moment. His work for the Biennale of Sydney includes a series of ceramic whistles shaped into the likeness of dingoes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Social gathering is quite powerful, to assemble in ways which are unexpected, bringing together different parts of the community that don&#8217;t naturally sit with each other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As an example, he points to Factory International&#8217;s series titled Artists in Times of Upheaval, which has featured artists including Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei and Ukrainian playwright Tetiana Kytsenko.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We invite artists who still live and work in the context of extreme conflict,&#8221; he says. &#8220;It&#8217;s not one perspective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;For us, it&#8217;s an important space to insist that you hear more and you engage more than just didactic, throwaway ideological lines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Making connections<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Low is a long-time attendee of the Biennale of Sydney, and plans to spend time in the city in October and after he delivers Manchester International Festival in July 2027.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A TV still of plants arranged in a darkened room. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That&#8217;s when he plans to engage with artists and communities both in Sydney and across Australia, including by going on Country to learn about plant life and nature in Australia from Indigenous communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[I want] to sit with Indigenous Elders so I can understand the world view and cosmologies around medicine, around food, around bringing communities together,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">When he visits Sydney, he also plans to collaborate with the city&#8217;s arts institutions, so that works created for the biennale have a &#8220;sustained impact&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I work a lot via collaborations,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Even for a particular commission, we think about multiple partners co-investing in making a work, so we&#8217;ll start to think about the future life of the projects post the Biennale of Sydney.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Low stresses the biennale is more than just a three-month exhibition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;What happens before and after is quite critical,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A Japanese Australian woman in a gallery stands beside a large textile sculpture of a heart, which features beads and ribbon.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/23ce661c3e22203338c9d310b2c5cad9.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">&#8220;[The biennale is] not an international spaceship that lands and it happens and then goes away,&#8221; Kee Hong says.
