Not every entry reaches general availability. Microsoft confirmed two cancellations within a few days of each other in late July: an inline search tool for the Teams compose box, due in September, and Copilot-generated search suggestions for Outlook, tracked since April.

Microsoft Scraps Teams Inline Search Before It Reached a Single Tenant

The first cancellation is a planned overhaul of the @mention function in the Teams compose box. Microsoft added the feature to its roadmap on 1 June 2026 under the name “Inline search in compose box.” It would have let users type an @mention and search across files, chats, channels and meetings without leaving the message they were drafting.

Today, that means tabbing out to Teams search or SharePoint, finding the file or chat, then copying a link back into the conversation. The new feature would have replaced all of that with a single lookup inside the message box. Microsoft had targeted general availability for September 2026. The plan covered Teams desktop, Mac and web clients in worldwide standard multi-tenant environments, but not mobile.

Microsoft has now updated Roadmap ID 564612 to say it is not moving forward with the feature “at this time.” The company hasn’t explained why, and hasn’t said whether it might revisit the idea later.

More stories on this topicCopilot-Powered Search Suggestions Also Pulled From the Outlook Roadmap

The second cancellation involves Outlook search. In April 2026, Microsoft began tracking a capability for Outlook that would surface Copilot-generated suggestions directly in the search interface. The idea was to help users find emails, meetings and files using natural language instead of exact keyword matches.

Microsoft has now updated that entry too, confirming it won’t move the feature forward. As with the Teams cancellation, there’s no stated reason and no confirmation on whether it will resurface later.

This feature would have been an extension of Microsoft’s existing Copilot investment in Outlook. UC Today has previously covered Microsoft’s plans to make Copilot an integral part of Outlook classic.

What’s Confirmed, and What Isn’t

Both cancellations are confirmed directly on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap, where each entry now reads that Microsoft is “not moving forward at this time.” Beyond that line, Microsoft has not issued a statement, blog post or Message Center update explaining either decision, and has not said whether either feature could return in a future form.

Microsoft’s own roadmap documentation sets out why entries disappear or change with so little warning. The roadmap page itself states:

The Microsoft 365 roadmap provides estimated release dates and descriptions for commercial features. All information is subject to change. As a feature or product becomes generally available, or is cancelled or postponed, information will be removed from this website.

Microsoft assigns each entry a status, and “Cancelled” is one of five defined states alongside “In development,” “Rolling out” and “Launched.” Both the Teams and Outlook entries were still marked “In development” when they were pulled.

This isn’t the first time Microsoft has used near-identical language to cancel an Outlook feature. A separate roadmap entry (ID 558110), covering one-click Copilot email summaries in Outlook, was updated on 21 April 2026 to read: “We are no longer proceeding with this change at this time. We apologise for any inconvenience.” It’s Microsoft’s standard cancellation template, not unique to these two features.

Where Teams’ AI Investment Is Actually Going

While inline search sat cancelled, Teams’ 2026 roadmap kept moving heavily toward AI in other areas, particularly calling and meetings. Microsoft has rolled out Teams Phone Agent, an AI calling experience that answers and routes calls for a department, alongside custom voice agents that organisations can build in Copilot Studio for tasks like handling a customer’s bill payment over the phone.

That direction was the centrepiece of Microsoft’s keynote at InfoComm 2026 in Las Vegas in June, delivered by Ilya Bukshteyn, Corporate Vice President for Microsoft Teams Calling, Meetings and Devices. Setting out where Teams’ AI investment is currently concentrated, Bukshteyn said:

AI will help on our behalf. By bringing together the details, context, and data we need in one place, AI will empower people to apply their own human creativity and ingenuity to drive better business outcomes while focusing on what matters most, both at work and in our personal lives.

That keynote was about calling and meeting agents, not search. Teams’ visible AI investment this year has gone into voice and meetings, not the compose box.

What IT Teams and Copilot Licence Holders Should Take From This

For enterprise buyers, the practical impact is limited. Neither feature had reached preview in any tenant, so there’s nothing to roll back and no workflow changes to manage. Treat Microsoft 365 Roadmap entries as declared intent, not a guaranteed delivery schedule, especially while a capability is still marked “in development” rather than “rolling out.”

IT and Copilot governance teams should check any adoption plans, training material or change communications that reference either feature, and update them so staff don’t expect a capability that won’t arrive as described. Teams that manage Message Center subscriptions or Copilot roadmap tracking should continue to hold off building processes or setting user expectations around any single roadmap entry until it reaches targeted or standard release.

Microsoft regularly previews upcoming Teams and Outlook capabilities on its Microsoft 365 Roadmap.
