{"id":572294,"date":"2026-07-28T15:46:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T15:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/572294\/"},"modified":"2026-07-28T15:46:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T15:46:10","slug":"singapore-growth-to-hold-firm-but-ai-boom-a-major-uncertainty-central-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/572294\/","title":{"rendered":"Singapore growth to hold firm but AI boom a \u2018major uncertainty\u2019: central bank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Singapore\u2019s economic growth should remain firm in the second half of 2026 although a major uncertainty is the sustainability of the AI investment boom, the head of its central bank said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) Managing Director Chia Der Jiun, speaking at the release \u200cof the central bank\u2019s annual report, said the Middle East conflict also posed risks, but for now global AI-related demand was \u201clikely to continue to provide a meaningful boost\u201d to the city state while other sectors maintain a pace of growth close to trend.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The annual report for the year ending March 2026 was released a day after the MAS tightened its policy settings for a second consecutive meeting, citing inflation risks.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Chia flagged the AI investment boom as \u201ca major uncertainty\u201d given how AI-driven electronics exports now \u2060account for more than 70 per cent of Asia\u2019s export growth so far in 2026, up from 46 per cent in 2024.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Monetary Authority of Singapore. Photo: Reuters<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">A lengthy boom could lead \u200cto inflation, while a pullback in AI investments \u201ccould sharply weaken global growth through a fall in business investment and semiconductor demand and negative wealth effects\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cMarkets will increasingly be looking to commercial revenue growth to justify \u200cthe financing risks.
