{"id":57256,"date":"2025-10-02T13:51:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T13:51:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/57256\/"},"modified":"2025-10-02T13:51:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T13:51:06","slug":"botswana-to-host-new-solar-powered-data-centre-campus-under-aaas-chillmine-partnership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/57256\/","title":{"rendered":"Botswana to Host New Solar-Powered Data Centre Campus Under AAAS\u2013ChillMine Partnership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-block-key=\"dhpnq\"><a href=\"https:\/\/aaas.energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" auto-attrs=\"\">AAAS Energy\u00a0<\/a>, a Dutch energy company, has partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/chillmine.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" auto-attrs=\"\">ChillMine\u00a0<\/a>, a US cloud computing firm, to develop a solar-powered data centre campus in Botswana.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"79it5\">The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to \u201cestablish a world-class facility designed to serve AI computing, global hyperscalers, and energy-intensive computing operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"f72t\">According to the companies, the data center will cater to large-scale cloud providers, who require large amounts of low-cost power to support their operations.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"199ne\">\u201cWe are thrilled to partner with AAAS to bring our data center expertise to Botswana. The combination of the energy infrastructure under development and our operational experience will enable us to deliver a best-in-class, high-performance data center campus that can meet the rigorous demands of the world\u2019s most sophisticated technology users.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"199ne\">\u2013 Brian Neirby, Co-founder and CEO, ChillMine Corporation\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"cv0bf\">The data center is expected to be constructed at the Leupane Energy Hub located near Palpye, in the eastern part of the country. AAAS signed an agreement last year with Botala Energy to explore the development of the energy hub that would consist of 250MW of solar, and 100MW\/400MW of Battery Energy Storage.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"c19ke\">The project is reportedly under development. According to the announcement mentioned above, the energy hub is capable of accommodating up to 500MW of solar and 200MW of gas-fired power generation. When constructed, the project is expected to sell power on the Southern African Power Pool.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"eoq8b\">\u201cThis MOU with ChillMine is a significant step in our vision to connect sustainable energy development with the digital economy. By combining power from the Solar PV + BESS Project with natural gas projects in Botswana, currently being developed by third parties, we are creating a unique value proposition for global technology companies seeking to expand into Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"eoq8b\">\u2013 Maarten Mennes, Managing Director, AAAS\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"6li6m\">ChillMine was originally founded in 2018 but registered a domain name \u2013 chillmine.io \u2013 in December 2024. In April, the company signed an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.datacenterdynamics.com\/en\/news\/chillmine-energywise-to-develop-solar-powered-data-centers-in-zimbabwe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" auto-attrs=\"\">MoU\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0with Zimbabwean independent power producer (IPP) Energywise to develop solar-powered data centers across the country. The companies intend to utilize power from Energywise\u2019s planned 100MW Runde River Solar Park in Zvishavane, in the south of the country, to power the facilities.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"9donc\">Based out of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, AAAS is a developer of solar parks in Sub-Saharan Africa.
