On 12 August 2026, a total solar eclipse<\/a> will sweep across\u00a0Greenland, Iceland,\u00a0Spain\u00a0and part of northeastern Portugal. This rare event will\u00a0provide\u00a0a unique opportunity to study\u00a0the solar\u00a0corona. Ahead of the eclipse, researchers are using advanced computer simulations and the latest solar observations to predict what the corona will look like during\u00a0occultation.\u00a0<\/p>\n By comparing those forecasts with reality, scientists\u00a0look to\u00a0improve the models used to understand the Sun’s magnetic environment and forecast space weather.\u00a0<\/p>\n \t\t\t3D Rotating Coronal Magnetic Topology In the leadup to the total solar eclipse on 12 August, researchers from KU Leuven are using computer models to predict what the Sun\u2019s corona will look like when the Moon blocks the Sun\u2019s bright\u00a0disk.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n These models are far more than visual predictions. They are digital reconstructions of the Sun’s magnetic environment, the same environment that drives space weather and fuels solar storms across the Solar System.\u00a0<\/p>\n Much like weather forecasts on Earth, space weather forecasts\u00a0rely on computer models to predict future conditions. By combining the latest observations with advanced simulations, scientists can estimate how the Sun\u2019s magnetic\u00a0environment is evolving and\u00a0assess the likelihood of solar activity affecting Earth. Better models lead to better forecasts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \tPutting the models to the test <\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\tSynthetic white light coronal simulation<\/a><\/p>\n The eclipse\u00a0acts as a natural reality check.\u00a0By predicting the appearance of the corona before totality and comparing those forecasts with what the eclipse reveals, scientists can assess how accurately their models reproduce the Sun’s three-dimensional magnetic environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n That\u00a0third dimension is one of the biggest challenges in space weather forecasting. From Earth, scientists can only\u00a0observe\u00a0one side of the Sun at a time, leaving important gaps in our understanding of its magnetic structure. Future missions such as Vigil<\/a> aim to help fill those gaps by\u00a0observing\u00a0the Sun from a different\u00a0vantage point.\u00a0<\/p>\n In the\u00a0meantime,\u00a0computer simulations like the ones shown here are our best way to interpret our 2D images of the Sun and transform them into fully 3D interpretations.\u00a0<\/p>\n Together, these observations and models provide a more complete picture of the solar activity affecting Earth, helping scientists improve space weather forecasts and providing earlier warnings of potentially hazardous solar storms.
