The Government has approved the latest phase of the Military Radar Programme clearing the way for Ireland to acquire its first long-range military radar systems.<\/p>\n
The programme will now move into its next stage which includes the acquisition of systems as well as further ground-based air defence capabilities.<\/p>\n
The first long-range radar systems are expected to be delivered next year, with the full capability in place by the end of 2028.<\/p>\n
“Today’s decision is a major milestone for Ireland\u2019s defence and security,” said Minister for Defence Helen McEntee.<\/p>\n
“For the first time, the Defence Forces will have the capability to monitor activity across Irish airspace using long-range radar.”<\/p>\n
“Together with new ground-based air defence capabilities, this will significantly strengthen Ireland\u2019s ability to protect out skies,” Ms McEntee said.<\/p>\n
The Commission on the Defence Forces identified the development of a primary radar capability as an immediate priority to ensure Ireland can maintain a complete ‘Recognised Air Picture\u2019.<\/p>\n
The Government has previously announced that France has been selected as Ireland\u2019s preferred partner to deliver the radar programme.<\/p>\n
The Department of Defence said that strong progress has also been made in developing the Defence Forces\u2019 ground-based air defence capability, including the accelerated delivery of Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) ahead of Ireland\u2019s EU Presidency.<\/p>\n
