There are fears of job losses in Cork<\/a> after medtech manufacturer Boston Scientific confirmed it would undergo restructuring. The Department of Enterprise has been informed of potential cuts, which are legally required only when 30 or more jobs are at risk.<\/p>\n

Boston Scientific has facilities in Cork, Galway and Tipperary<\/a>, which collectively employ more than 7,000 people. The company has been operating in Ireland since 1994 and expanded to Cork in 1997.<\/p>\n

The company has not confirmed the exact number of roles at risk, and when CorkBeo asked about the potential impact on Cork, a spokesperson said they would not confirm the regional impact of the proposed cuts.<\/p>\n

It comes as the company approved a global restructuring plan last week, which plans to reduce pre-tax operating expenses by an estimated $500 million. According to a regulatory filing, the company expects to spend up to $300 million in termination benefits.<\/p>\n

Despite the proposed cuts, the company says it remains firmly committed to Ireland, which has been a key part of the company’s global structure for more than 30 years.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Boston Scientific said: “Boston Scientific has undertaken restructuring programs as the business has evolved in order to align resources in support of our long-term strategy and deliver sustainable value to healthcare providers and patients.<\/p>\n

“The recent program is consistent with that framework and includes enhancing operational and functional capabilities as well as global supply chain network optimisation.<\/p>\n

“In general, we do not break out program details by business, region or function.<\/p>\n

“Ireland has been an important part of Boston Scientific’s global organisation for more than 30 years. We are committed to our long-term future in the country and recognise the significant contributions our employees in Ireland make across our global business.”<\/p>\n

Consultation with affected employees is expected to begin shortly, and Labour\u2019s enterprise spokesperson George Lawlor TD has called for management at the company to ‘engage in good faith and protect jobs where possible.’<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cBoston Scientific has been a strong and important employer for many people in communities across the country and news of potential job losses will be deeply worrying the employees impacted, their families and their communities.<\/p>\n

“My thoughts are with them as they enter this uneasy period. Management must engage in good faith and protect jobs where possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a highly skilled and highly qualified workforce who look set to be casualties in the deep uncertainty that Trump\u2019s tariffs are spreading internationally. There is no silver bullet to solve this challenge, but we do need to see a plan coming from Government to protect jobs in the face of this threat.<\/p>\n
