Prices at the grocery store keep rising, and the stress is showing for older Americans. In a recent AARP survey<\/a>, \ufeffmore than 4 in 10 respondents age 50 and older said groceries cost more than they can afford.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany seniors are on a fixed income, and groceries are not a fixed cost,\u201d says Bobbi Rebell, a certified financial planner in New York City. \u201cEveryday staples have gone up dramatically in cost, and there\u2019s only so much you can cut for so long.\u201d<\/p>\n

The AARP survey found that nearly half of people age 50-plus are taking steps like reducing impulse buys and using coupons<\/a> more often to stretch their grocery dollars. Tech tools can help too. Food waste apps connect you with surplus groceries, restaurant meals, bakery items and produce that might otherwise be thrown out at the end of the day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

These apps direct you to steep discounts, often 50 percent or more, and help reduce the 94 billion pounds of food that goes to waste<\/a> each year in the U.S. Here are six that can help you save big on groceries<\/a> and meals.<\/p>\n

1. Too Good to Go<\/p>\n

One of the most popular food waste apps is Too Good to Go, with over 540,000 ratings on Apple\u2019s app store. The app partners with local grocery stores<\/a>, restaurants and caf\u00e9s to sell leftover food at big discounts. Its partners offer \u201csurprise bags\u201d containing food that hasn\u2019t sold by the end of the day, with some items marked down by more than 50 percent.<\/p>\n

\u201cUsers not only get a fun surprise in the bags but also feel great about saving the food that would otherwise have gone to waste,\u201d says Rebell. The app allows users to filter options for vegetarian or vegan diets. The downside: You don\u2019t know what you\u2019re getting until you open the bag \u2014 but that\u2019s part of the fun, Rebell says.\ufeff \u200b<\/p>\n

2. Flashfood<\/p>\n

This app partners with grocery stores looking to sell food nearing its best-by date for up to 50 percent off. You can browse daily deals on meats, produce and other items, then add what you want to your cart and pick up the food at the supermarket. \u00a0<\/p>\n
