{"id":57698,"date":"2025-10-02T18:25:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T18:25:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/57698\/"},"modified":"2025-10-02T18:25:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T18:25:07","slug":"garda-charged-with-interfering-with-district-court-prosecution-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/57698\/","title":{"rendered":"Garda charged with interfering with District Court prosecution \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A garda has been charged with interfering with a District Court prosecution with the intent to pervert the course of justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Brian O\u2019Neill (45), with an address in Arklow, Co Wicklow, appeared before Judge Treasa Kelly at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-district-court\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-district-court\/\">Dublin District Court<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was ordered to appear again in December for prosecutors to serve him with a book of evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Det Sgt Kieran Kilcoyne, of the Garda Anti-Corruption Unit,  , told Judge Kelly the accused was arrested on September 26th at Lucan Garda station in Dublin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was charged with a single offence, and he made no reply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr O\u2019Neill is accused of requesting a third party, a prosecuting garda, to deliberately interfere with a District Court prosecution, with the intent to pervert the course of justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The incident is alleged to have taken place between October 25th and December 13th, 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Det Sgt Kilcoyne stated said the accused was on station bail and, therefore, there would be no application for bail conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Defence solicitor Liz Hughes said there was consent to a lengthy adjournment and whatever time was required for the State to complete the book of evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Judge Kelly noted the Director of Public Prosecutions directed that Mr O\u2019Neill would face trial on indictment in the Circuit Court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">No plea was entered by the accused, who spoke only to confirm he was in court while stepping forward when his case was called.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Judge Kelly ordered him to appear on December 12th to be served with a book of evidence and returned for trial.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A garda has been charged with interfering with a District Court prosecution with the intent to pervert the&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":37058,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[8411,1346,61,60,43],"class_list":["post-57698","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ireland","tag-dublin-district-court","tag-garda-siochana","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/57698","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=57698"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/57698\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/37058"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=57698"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=57698"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=57698"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
