Queer, the lauded drama starring Daniel Craig and Lesley Manville, is leaving the BBC very soon. If you want to watch Luca Guadagnino’s sensual period romance, you have just under a fortnight to do so.<\/p>\n

The film is an adaptation of William S Burroughs’ 1985 novella of the same name, and is set in 1950s Mexico City and Ecuador. Craig portrays William Lee, a figure largely considered to be a fictionalised version of the author.<\/p>\n

As he moves to South America, William finds it to be a lonely existence, but his spirits are lifted as he soon becomes infatuated with Eugene Allerton (played by Drew Starkey), a man much younger than himself.<\/p>\n

Written by Justin Kuritzkes, who worked with Guadagnino on Challengers, the period romantic drama is currently streaming<\/a> on BBC iPlayer<\/a> in the UK. It is due to leave in the near future, however, with the listing set to expire on 11 August.<\/p>\n

In addition to Craig, Starkey and Manville, the latter of whom portrays Dr Cotter, the cast for the film includes Jason Schwartzman, David Lowery, Micha\u00ebl Borremans, Omar Apollo and Lisandro Alonso.<\/p>\n

Though it underperformed at the box office<\/a>, Queer was generally lauded by critics, with Craig’s performance being praised. He won Best Actor at the 96th National Board of Review Awards, and was also nominated for a Golden Globe and an Actor Award.<\/p>\n

On Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, the 2024 film currently has a solid approval rating of 77% from 247 reviews, with the site’s critical consensus noting Craig’s “sterling performance” as well as its “meandering and vital” style of storytelling.<\/p>\n

“This hypnotic, often moving film speaks eloquently \u2014 in some scenes, graphically \u2014 about queer carnal ecstasy, and about the difficulty of its pursuit. It is a remarkable achievement by the prolific Guadagnino,” opined The Financial Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Queer is both visually lush, sexually explosive, and emotionally infuriating. It is not a journey that leaves our hearts full, but open and aching,” wrote Mashable<\/a>, while Sight & Sound<\/a> described Craig’s performance as “superb”.<\/p>\n

The Daily Telegraph<\/a> was also full of praise in a five-star review, writing: “Queer doesn’t scrimp on provocation and pleasure, but it’s also a beautiful film about male loneliness, and the way a solitary life can so easily shade into a life sentence.”<\/p>\n
