Nearly 20 years after its founding, the Columbia Pike Documentary Project<\/a> has never run out of people, places and events to chronicle.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe community is still in transition,\u201d Lloyd Wolf, one of the initiative\u2019s founders, said during a July 26 presentation at the Arlington Historical Society.<\/p>\n

Wolf and Paula Endo founded the documentary effort between 2006 and 2007. Supported by the Columbia Pike Partnership<\/a>, it chronicles daily life and special events in the diverse corridor known as \u201cthe world in a ZIP code.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Pike isn\u2019t much to look at \u2014 it\u2019s who lives there that makes it interesting,\u201d Wolf said to a packed audience. \u201cI like pictures that cause you to question a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n

His presentation was held in conjunction with the museum\u2019s presentation of \u201cWe the People: The World in Our Commonwealth,\u201d a traveling exhibition sponsored by the Virginia Museum of History & Culture<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Four of Wolf\u2019s photographs are included in the traveling presentation. Eighteen are displayed as part of the main exhibition<\/a>, running through Sept. 7 in Richmond.<\/p>\n

Wolf and Endo began collaborating on photography in the 1980s when they were both Arlington educators. They decided to focus their efforts on the Columbia Pike corridor in the mid-2000s, when major transitions were occurring.<\/p>\n

That evolution continues today, as new buildings supplant older ones.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt one point, I went and photographed every building on the Pike,\u201d Wolf said. \u201cI need to do that again.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to Endo and Wolf, photographers working on the project have included Mimi Xang Ho, Duy Tran, Aleksandra Lagkueva and Lara Ajami. The project has produced three books: \u201cTransitions<\/a>,\u201d \u201cLiving Diversity<\/a>\u201d and \u201cThe Road Ahead<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wolf said that while there are challenges in gaining trust among immigrant communities in the Columbia Pike area, the payoff when that happens is rewarding.<\/p>\n

The effort chronicling their lives has \u201chelped them feel validated as community members,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The photographers shoot primarily in color using digital cameras; Wolf said he last shot in film in 2003. Photographers have avoided using video in their documentary efforts, however.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a different creature,\u201d Wolf said of the skill sets needed for video work. It\u2019s also expensive, compared to photography.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf someone dropped a hundred grand on us, sure, but that\u2019s not going to happen,\u201d he said of moving into videography.<\/p>\n

Wolf grew up in the Bailey\u2019s Crossroads area at a time when Northern Virginia consisted of \u201csouthern whites, southern Blacks and government workers,\u201d he said. His parents were among the last group.<\/p>\n

Wolf watched as waves of immigrants arrived in the local area \u2014 Asian Americans in the 1970s, then Central American immigrants, \u201cthen everybody else,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are so many groups, you can just be who you are,\u201d Wolf said. \u201cThis is a model for how people can live.\u201d<\/p>\n

Peter Vaselopulos, president of the historical society<\/a>, said Wolf has become an institution through his efforts chronicling civic life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always been a great admirer of the work that Lloyd is doing,\u201d he said. \u201cPhotography speaks in such a volume of words.
