{"id":578805,"date":"2026-08-01T12:23:42","date_gmt":"2026-08-01T12:23:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/578805\/"},"modified":"2026-08-01T12:23:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-01T12:23:42","slug":"the-booking-com-scam-that-is-incredibly-difficult-to-tell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/578805\/","title":{"rendered":"The Booking.com scam that is &#8216;incredibly difficult&#8217; to tell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Booking.com user has revealed how she nearly fell for a sophisticated scam after her details were leaked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In March, Newstalk producer Dee King booked accommodation with Booking.com for Edinburgh this summer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, a few weeks later, the platform\u2019s website was hacked and some people\u2019s details were illicitly obtained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Booking.com contacted customers to warn them of the data breach but Ms King didn\u2019t pay much attention to the email at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In June, she got a text message from a British number purporting to be the hotel she had booked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was basically just to verify my details,\u201d Ms King recalled on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstalk.com\/shows\/the-claire-byrne-show-2228535\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Claire Byrne Show<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey had my full name, they obviously had my phone number to WhatsApp me, they had the dates I was going for &#8211; they were all correct &#8211; and the number of rooms I had booked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, they had all my information and to ensure my booking remains confirmed, they needed some more details.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a link on the WhatsApp message to fill out these extra details and Ms King decided to ignore it, thinking she would do it later.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen a week later, I got another WhatsApp from a different number &#8211; but again, the exact same script,\u201d she continued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe exact same text all looks very, very official and looks very legitimate and it was a business account as well that it came from.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only thing strange about this one was it was from a US number &#8211; so, that was a bit odd.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t know why a US number would be texting me about a British booking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks later Ms King got an email that claimed to be from her accommodation provider, which also looked \u201cperfect\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt had all the right branding of the accommodation,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was all in perfect colour; there were no spelling mistakes, it was all formatted perfectly, looked like an incredibly legitimate email.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After she received a reminder email, Ms King decided to fill out her card details and it was only when she was ready to submit that she began to feel suspicious.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She contacted the accommodation provider and they told her the email had nothing to do with them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt turned out the whole thing was a scam,\u201d Ms King said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I was this close to falling for it and I can absolutely see how anybody else would have, because mine is partly through luck, partly through laziness.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Most reliable red flags&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Also on the programme, Newstalk\u2019s Tech Correspondent Jess Kelly said it can be \u201cincredibly difficult\u201d to work out what is a scam and what is a legitimate email from a company.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, she suggested people should be suspicious of any email or text that suggests a booking will be cancelled unless people hand over their card details.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat to me is one of the most reliable red flags that we can look for, because as Dee said, there weren&#8217;t spelling issues or anything like that,\u201d Ms Kelly explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut &#8216;if you don&#8217;t do this, this consequence will happen&#8217; &#8211; that type of jeopardy is a red flag that very often scammers will use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Main image: A man using his debit card.
