RT\u00c9\u2019s Liveline on Friday<\/a>, Ms Jessop said that on one occasion, \u201cI said \u2018no\u2019, and he [Joseph Jessop] literally picked me up and was shushing me\u201d.<\/p>\nShe said a few hours after she was raped, two workers from Tusla arrived at her front door.\n<\/p>\n
There were false allegations put to me, it broke me.<\/p>\n
Ms Jessop told Liveline that this was an attempt to \u201ctry and discredit and tarnish me and my character\u201d.<\/p>\n
She said it was \u201cvery hard trying to deal with all that, and trying to be there for my kids, as well as trying to deal with my own emotions\u201d.<\/p>\n
Ms Jessop added that in her locality, she had \u201cheard some really wild stories about things I was meant to be doing\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was all horrendous lies\u201d.<\/p>\n
Ms Jessop was raped when her relationship had broken down, but she was still living in the same house as her former husband.<\/p>\n
She said she felt that people would not believe she had been raped because they were still legally married.<\/p>\n
Ms Jessop said that \u201clooking back now, there were red flags that I did overlook\u201d, such as accusations of cheating and Joseph Jessop\u2019s \u201cJekyll and Hyde\u201d temper.<\/p>\n
She said things \u201cwent bad and started to escalate\u201d around 2014 and that prior to this period, she was a \u201cvery outgoing and a social person\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt just destroyed me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Jessop remarked that \u201cit\u2019s going to be a long road\u201d to get back to herself.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t even know if I know who that person is anymore, it strips you a lot,\u201d said Ms Jessop.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou lose your identity, and even finding things you like on Netflix and it\u2019s like, \u2018oh, I can actually pick the movie that I want to watch\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Jessop said that she had \u201cnormalised things that were far from normal\u201d.<\/p>\n
There were continuous insults, and someone breaks your character down over time, and you don\u2019t realise it at the time.<\/p>\n
She said that around April 2020, \u201cphysically or mentally I couldn\u2019t tolerate it anymore, and I ended the relationship\u201d.<\/p>\n
Ms Jessop said she first reported the physical abuse in November 2020 after she was held down and punched and headbutted.<\/p>\n
She said this attack happened because \u201cI was going to leave the house and he didn\u2019t want me leaving the house\u201d.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Ms Jessop said it was difficult to face Joseph Jessop in court and \u201creliving it\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust been around him was awful.\u201d<\/p>\n
Speaking on the trial, she said it was \u201creally hard reliving everything, knowing that in the box beside me, he was sitting there, and I\u2019d have to pass him.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a really difficult thing to go through, but I\u2019m glad I did.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said she was \u201crelieved\u201d with the 10-year jail sentence and added: \u201cI have a life sentence from what he did, but at least he\u2019s been held accountable for his actions.\u201d<\/p>\n
The judge had set a headline sentence of 11-and-a-half years, which he reduced to 10 years taking mitigating factors into account.<\/p>\n
However, the judge noted there was little in mitigation, given Jessop\u2019s lack of guilty pleas but that he had no serious previous convictions.<\/p>\n
Ms Jessop also said it\u2019s been \u201cvery hard\u201d explaining the situation to her children.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019d be hearing stories back in school of different things that was happening, and there\u2019s that level of embarrassment as well.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re seeing your dad posted all over the papers, and accepting that that\u2019s the type of person he is, and that\u2019s hard as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Ms Jessop expressed concern that there could be \u201ca lot of people in marriages or relationships going through a similar situation, and maybe don\u2019t realise that this is wrong\u201d.<\/p>\n
That you can\u2019t just demand and take sex and violate someone\u2019s body, that it\u2019s against the law.<\/p>\n
Ms Jessop was holding a purple teddy during the RT\u00c9 interview.<\/p>\n
She said she chose purple as the colour is used globally to represent domestic violence awareness.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt helps me regulate my nervous system,\u201d said Ms Jessop.<\/p>\n
\u201cI get severe panic attacks, and I had him the whole way through the trial.<\/p>\n
