St Sylvester\u2019s claim O\u2019Neills All-Ireland Senior Club 7s title<\/p>\n
DUBLIN\u2019S St Sylvester\u2019s were crowned O\u2019Neills All-Ireland Senior Club 7s champions on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Managed by Peter Clarke, and with a host of household names in their ranks, Syl\u2019s stormed to glory at the home of neighbours Naomh Mearn\u00f3g.<\/p>\n
Back in 2008, Naomh Mearn\u00f3g and St Sylvester\u2019s teamed up to win the cup but as the gap back to that previous success was bridged, this was Syl\u2019s as a standalone outfit claiming glory.<\/p>\n
Syl\u2019s stormed to a 5-2 to 0-2 final victory over Tyrone outfit Killeeshil in the final, with former Dublin star Nicole Owens helping herself to a brace of goals.<\/p>\n
Current Dublin ace Kate Sullivan scored 1-1, with Tipperary pair Anna-Rose Kennedy and Angela McGuigan grabbing a goal each.<\/p>\n
At half-time, Syl\u2019s were 3-1 to 0-1 ahead, Owens opening the scoring with a point before Sullivan, Kennedy and Owens netted.<\/p>\n
Killeeshil\u2019s solitary point in the first half came from a Gr\u00e1inne McErlean free, and she also registered a point from play in the second period.<\/p>\n
Goals from Owens and McGuigan in the second half put the end result beyond any doubt, before Sullivan completed the scoring with a late free.<\/p>\n
Syl\u2019s also had Dublin legend Niamh McEvoy in fine form in an unfamiliar goalkeeping role. As the winners came through the stern challenge of Leitrim\u2019s Glencar-Manorhamilton, McEvoy pulled off some brilliant saves, including a penalty.<\/p>\n
Syl\u2019s won that semi-final by 4-2 to 0-2, as Killeeshil stormed past the challenge of Antrim\u2019s St Ergnat\u2019s Moneyglass, 8-3 to 4-6.<\/p>\n
McEvoy smiled: \u201cWe didn\u2019t have far to come out of our beds this morning! We just wanted to make sure we were working on everything that we\u2019ve been working on with our new management. We really wanted to come out and enjoy day \u2013 but delighted to win.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s nice to start off the year, going into (club) championship with a bit of silverware. We didn\u2019t have any easy games out there. We nearly lost out first game and we had to up the ante and reassess our tactics.
