A man in his 50s has died after getting into difficulty in the water at Castletownbere Pier in West Cork.<\/p>\n
Shortly after 5.30pm, Valentia Coastguard was alerted to a report by the National Ambulance Service that a man was in the water at the pier.<\/p>\n
The local coastguard, along with the RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat were dispatched to the scene.<\/p>\n
The man was taken from the water in an unresponsive state and was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
Garda\u00ed said the man’s body has been removed to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place.<\/p>\n
A file will also be prepared for the coroner<\/p>\n
Deputy Mayor of the county of Cork Finbarr Harrington said the local community is “shocked” by the news.<\/p>\n
“It’s shocking, there is real sadness for the man and his family. People are shocked.<\/p>\n
“Usually you associate tragedies at sea with bad weather – storms and rough seas – but not in this case.<\/p>\n
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the man and his family at this very difficult time.<\/p>\n
“The town is very busy this weekend. I opened the Festival of the Sea last night in the town.<\/p>\n
