{"id":579905,"date":"2026-08-02T06:29:26","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T06:29:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/579905\/"},"modified":"2026-08-02T06:29:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T06:29:26","slug":"driver-caught-at-172km-h-as-gardai-detect-more-than-1590-bank-holiday-speeding-offences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/579905\/","title":{"rendered":"Driver caught at 172km\/h as garda\u00ed detect more than 1,590 bank holiday speeding offences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A motorist has been caught travelling at 172km\/h in a 120km\/h zone as <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/maintopics\/an-garda-s%C3%ADoch%C3%A1na_topic-5076620.html\">garda\u00ed<\/a> detected more than 1,590 speeding offences during the first two days of the August bank holiday roads policing operation.<\/p>\n<p>The highest speed recorded was on the M1 at Greenfields, Swords, Co Dublin, on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The nationwide garda operation began on Thursday and will continue until Tuesday, with officers carrying out Mandatory Intoxicant Testing checkpoints and high-visibility patrols throughout the bank holiday weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">During the first two days of the operation, 39 people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Garda\u00ed also detected around 200 motorists using a mobile phone while driving or failing to wear a seatbelt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Other notable speeds recorded on Friday included:<\/p>\n<p>                142km\/h in a 100km\/h zone on the N24 at Belline and Rogerstown, Piltown, Co Kilkenny.<br \/>\n                127km\/h in an 80km\/h zone on the R428 at Kylebeg, Stradbally, Co Laois.<br \/>\n                126km\/h in a 60km\/h zone on the Waterford Road in Clonmel, Co Tipperary.<br \/>\n                115km\/h in a 50km\/h zone on Clontarf Road in Dublin 3.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Despite the high number of detections, garda\u00ed said there were no road fatalities recorded during the first two days of the operation.
