US President Donald Trump is likely to travel to Ireland next month for a visit that will include his attendance at the Irish Open at his golf course in Doonbeg, Co Clare, and events in Dublin.<\/p>\n
RT\u00c9 News understands the visit – which will involve a significant security presence due to the likelihood of protests – will take place over at least two days, with Mr Trump flying into Ireland on 12 September.<\/p>\n
This date is to ensure he will be in the US for the annual commemoration of the 11 September terrorist attacks, and that he will be in Doonbeg in time for the end of the Irish Open on 13 September.<\/p>\n
Mr Trump’s visit will also include a trip to Dublin, which is likely to involve a meeting with Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin.<\/p>\n
However, sources said it is highly unlikely that Mr Trump will give a speech to the D\u00e1il or Seanad, or attend any events at Leinster House, as TDs and senators are not due to return from their summer break until 16 September.<\/p>\n
It is not yet clear whether President Catherine Connolly will meet with Mr Trump as his trip to Ireland is not a formal or State visit.<\/p>\n
While it was previously reported that President Connolly may be out of the country at that time, it is understood that that schedule has not been officially agreed and could potentially change.<\/p>\n
The US president’s trip to Ireland and its coinciding with the Irish Open weekend has been long flagged in recent months, with a previous expectation he would visit Ireland between 12 and 14 September.<\/p>\n
Both he and the Taoiseach discussed the prospect during the St Patrick’s Day visit to the White House in March.<\/p>\n
