Warning: Spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: Brand New Day!Despite brief moments when Tom Holland<\/a>‘s character seems like he’s about to slip into villainy, Spider-Man: Brand New Day<\/a> still frames its title character as the movie’s central protagonist. Almost everything he does throughout the story is for the benefit of others, and even things he undertakes for his own reasons aren’t intended to do harm to the innocent. However, there is something that Peter Parker does in the new Marvel movie that becomes problematic almost immediately, even though that was never his intention. It will also inevitably haunt the future of the MCU<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What’s especially compelling about Peter’s worrying actions is that they’re a cool spin on a Marvel Comics twist that has been adapted for the big and small screens before. Throwing Spider-Man into the mix really shakes things up, though. Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time the MCU has taken a comic book storyline and bent it out of shape to fit the movies. It is one of the most narratively loaded instances of something like this taking place, though. I can’t wait to see how things progress beyond Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s ending<\/a>.<\/p>\n

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Introduces the MCU’s Take on Mutant Control Collars<\/p>\n

The X-Men comics debuted a device in 1981 that, once locked around a mutant’s neck, prevented them from using their powers. The devices have since been brought into various X-Men movies<\/a> and TV shows, and even showed up in Deadpool 2. While primarily a way for humans to keep mutants in check, the collars have been used by mutants to defeat each other as well. Because the MCU has gone so long without the legal right to incorporate the X-Men into the franchise, the control collars (sometimes called inhibitor collars) haven’t featured in the MCU’s mainline efforts until now.<\/p>\n

Instead, they’ve been limited to the Fox movies and other ancillary on-screen universes. Brand New Day changes all that. Disney purchased Fox in 2019, but it has taken until now for the MCU movies to fully reap those rewards. The reveal that Sadie Sink is the franchise’s new Jean Grey was a fun moment all of its own, if not a little predictable. That being said, it was also a huge milestone in the MCU timeline. The X-Men are coming, and they’re right around the corner. With that group of characters comes all the comic book lore associated with them, including the technology that inhibits their powers. The thing is, the X-Men usually get a good amount of time following each reboot and adaptation before the inhibitor tech is developed to control them.<\/p>\n

Because Peter wants to suppress his own mutations in Brand New Day, that desire ultimately leads to his invention of the universal gene inhibitor, building off Bruce’s version that’s built only to stop him from becoming the Hulk<\/a>. As such, Jean and the other inevitable mutants who are set to permeate the MCU will be debuting in a world where the technology to disarm them already exists. Given how easy the inhibitors are to currently remove in Brand New Day (they’re designed to be worn voluntarily, after all), I would expect Damage Control to quickly take Peter’s breakthrough and weaponize it by encasing the hardware in a collar more like what we’ve seen before.<\/p>\n

Making Peter Parker the Universal Inhibitor Tech’s Inventor Adds a Dark Twist to the Famous X-Men Lore<\/p>\n

The control collars in the comics and previous on-screen adaptations have always been invented by Marvel villains. Depending on the story being told, there can sometimes be almost no attention given to the inhibitor tech’s developers. That being said, when it isn’t a faceless organization or scientist being credited, it’s usually Bolivar Trask of Trask Industries who’s deemed responsible for the breakthrough. The latter is the case in things like 2014’s Days of Future Past and the forgotten live-action X-Men spin-off<\/a>, The Gifted. While certain heroes, like Beast, have been known to co-opt and rework the tech to allow mutants to suppress certain powers voluntarily, the good guys have never been responsible for inventing it in the first place.<\/p>\n

Until now. Even though Spidey only originally intends to suppress his own unwanted mutations, he ends up using his invention to disarm Jean in Brand New Day, which allows Damage Control to capture and torture her in an attempt to replicate her abilities for their own personal gain. Even though that specific inhibitor gets destroyed, there’s no way Damage Control didn’t study it so they can make more. Pandora’s box has been opened, and just as certain pieces of Stark tech changed the world for the worse in certain hands, Peter’s invention is set to do something very similar. Once it starts to spread and impacts the lives of Jean, the incoming X-Men, and other mutant-adjacent characters like Hulk and Spider-Man, I can’t imagine Peter will take it well. He’ll surely be consumed by guilt and regret.<\/p>\n

Peter’s invention completely disables a mutant’s powers while it’s worn, whereas Marvel’s more traditional inhibitor collars physically punish mutants when they try to access their abilities.<\/p>\n

What makes Peter’s universal inhibitor especially loaded with negative fallout is that he developed it for all the wrong reasons. While he was initially worried about what his advancing mutations were doing to him, they ultimately turned out to be making him stronger than ever. Furthermore, his use of it on Jean to allow her to be taken into custody was motivated by the false belief that she was being villainous for villainy’s sake. The eventual reveal that she was simply trying to find her sister is incredibly understandable, as is her anger at Damage Control. While Peter’s inhibitor started with neutral-to-good intentions, it’s pretty obvious it will be used mostly by those who wish to do harm in the events that follow Spider-Man: Brand New Day.<\/p>\n
