{"id":580304,"date":"2026-08-02T13:09:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T13:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/580304\/"},"modified":"2026-08-02T13:09:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T13:09:08","slug":"gary-cronin-steps-down-as-republic-of-ireland-womens-assistant-coach-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/580304\/","title":{"rendered":"Gary Cronin steps down as Republic of Ireland women\u2019s assistant coach \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gary Cronin has stepped down as assistant coach to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/republic-of-ireland-wnt\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/republic-of-ireland-wnt\">Republic of Ireland<\/a> manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/carla-ward\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/carla-ward\">Carla Ward<\/a> after just six games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Cronin was chosen from 200 applicants in January to replace Alan Mahon, who lasted 12 months before he resigned, citing \u201cpersonal reasons\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ward must now prepare for the World Cup playoff against Kazakhstan in October with the support of her other assistant coaches Amber Whiteley and Emma Byrne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In June, Ward was asked to comment on how Cronin was adapting to his first role coaching women, having previously worked in the men\u2019s game at Longford Town, Bray Wanderers and Bohemians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cLook, Gary\u2019s a really nice guy and I think it takes time when you go from [men\u2019s to women\u2019s game],\u201d said Ward. \u201cMen\u2019s football and women\u2019s football are very different. So, if you\u2019re surrounded by 20 guys or 20 females, we\u2019re a different breed, I don\u2019t mind saying that. Naturally, it takes its time but Gary\u2019s a top man.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Ireland players, led by Katie McCabe and Denise O\u2019Sullivan, previously questioned the FAI decision not to offer Colin Healy a contract extension to continue as the Ireland assistant coach after the team missed out on qualifying for Euro 2025. Healy was subsequently appointed manager of the Kerry FC men\u2019s team in the League of Ireland first division. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt was an honour to represent my country and work with such a talented and committed group of players and staff,\u201d said Cronin. \u201cAs I move on to new opportunities, I\u2019d like to wish the Ireland women\u2019s national team the very best of luck in the upcoming playoffs \u2013 hopefully they can go on to clinch qualification to another World Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland travel to Kazakhstan on October 9th, with the playoff semi-final second leg at P\u00e1irc U\u00ed Chaoimh on October 13th.
