\n\tA powerful one-two punch from \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day<\/a>\u201d and \u201cThe Odyssey<\/a>\u201d has fueled the biggest collective weekend in box office history, with roughly $430 million across all movies in the marketplace.<\/p>\n

\n\tPrior to this, the top three weekends were led by \u201cAvengers: Endgame\u201d ($402 million collectively), 2018\u2019s \u201cAvengers: Infinity War\u201d ($314 million collectively) and 2015\u2019s \u201cStar Wars: The Force Awakens\u201d ($313 million collectively). It\u2019s a particularly exciting benchmark for the recently married Tom Holland and Zendaya, who star in \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d and \u201cThe Odyssey.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe have conquered a box-office milestone that seemed forever out of reach,\u201d says Paul Dergarabedian, Rentrak\u2019s head of marketplace trends. \u201cThis is now only the second $400 million-plus weekend in box office history.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day,\u201d the fourth comic-book adventure starring Holland as the web-slinging hero, exploded with $355 million in its domestic debut<\/a>, ranking as the second-biggest opening of all time as well as the second movie in history to cross $300 million in a single weekend. \u201cBrand New Day\u201d nearly matched the opening weekend record held by 2019\u2019s behemoth \u201cAvengers: Endgame,\u201d which ignited to an astounding $357 million. (And some analysts believe \u201cBrand New Day\u201d could end up eclipsing \u201cEndgame\u2019s\u201d record when final numbers are tallied on Monday.) \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d already scored the largest preview haul with $72 million, as well as the biggest opening day with $168 million.<\/p>\n

\n\tHowever, \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d couldn\u2019t have powered the overall weekend record alone. \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d remained a force in its third frame with $51 million, a remarkable haul given the all-out frenzy around Peter Parker. Holdovers like Disney\u2019s \u201cToy Story 5\u201d and \u201cMoana\u201d and Universal\u2019s \u201cMinion & Monsters\u201d also contributed to the fun. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe combination of\u00a0\u2018Spider-Man\u2019\u00a0and\u00a0\u2018The Odyssey\u2019\u00a0\u2014 a legacy superhero sequel and a big original production \u2014 is taking the box office to new highs by a comfortable margin,\u201d says David A. Gross, who publishes the box office newsletter FranchiseRe.\u00a0\u201cThese are stunning numbers.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d is the follow-up to 2021\u2019s behemoth \u201cSpider-Man: No Way Home,\u201d which opened to $260 million (the third-biggest debut ever) and powered to $1.9 billion by the end of its run. And that was without China, a major market for Marvel movies. That film was huge because all three Spider-Men \u2014 Holland, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield \u2014 shared the screen in a crossover event for the ages. Since \u201cNo Way Home\u201d ended on a massive cliffhanger (Holland\u2019s Peter Parker made the difficult decision to erase his identity from the world in order to save the multiverse), a ton of people have been waiting half a decade to find out what happens next. Critics and audiences were high on \u201cBrand New Day,\u201d which boasts a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and \u201cA\u201d grade on CinemaScore exit polls \u2014 setting up the comic-book tentpole to dominate in theaters throughout the rest of August.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Odyssey\u201d continues to shatter expectations, too. Christopher Nolan\u2018s Greek epic has generated a remarkable $911 million worldwide after less than a month in theaters. It\u2019s less than a week away from crossing the billion-dollar mark, underscoring Nolan\u2019s ability to transform his movies into cultural events. \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d will also surpass \u201cThe Dark Knight\u201d ($1.008 billion) and 2012\u2019s \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises\u201d ($1.08 billion) as the director\u2019s highest-grossing film of all time.
