Of these eligible adults, around 74% of Indian adults have accessed a loan at least once in these past 10 years, it added.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of demographic, the <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/topic\/credit-expansion\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"credit footprint expansion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">credit footprint expansion<\/a> is being driven by women, younger borrowers and non-metro regions. Among the regions, growth in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar is outpacing that of traditional strongholds in the west and south India, the report added.<\/p>\n<p>Bhavesh Jain, MD and CEO of <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/focus\/transunion-cibil-ceo-talks-about-powering-india-s-economic-growth-through-responsible-credit-11737867422148.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"TransUnion CIBIL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TransUnion CIBIL<\/a> identified that in the period of the study, India saw \u201cmomentous changes\u201d such as demonetisation, goods and services tax (GST) and Unified Payment Interface (UPI).<\/p>\n<p>74% of eligible Indians took credit at least once<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/cic-urges-income-tax-dept-to-institutionalise-a-taxpayer-friendly-mechanism-highlights-grievance-redressal-issues-11772711693681.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"credit information company\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">credit information company<\/a>&#8216;s new report titled \u2018Unlocking Access: Journey of Credit Expansion in India\u2019 noted that the proportion of eligible Indians who have taken credit at least once has more than doubled from 35% in March 2017 to 74% in March 2026. Meanwhile, credit monitoring has jumped from 1% to 35% between March 2018 and March 2026, it added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the course of the decade, regulators, banks and lenders, non-banking finance companies (NBFCs), fintechs, credit information companies (CICs), technological advances and the digital public infrastructure have collectively expanded pathways to <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/credit-card-balance-transfers-affect-your-credit-score-experts-say-heres-what-borrowers-should-know-11785508044717.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"credit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">credit<\/a>,\u201d Jain stated, adding that the pandemic also \u201caccelerated adoption of digital tools\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to the study, the number of New-To-Credit (NTC) consumers in retail originations declined from 32% in March 2017 quarter to 13% in the March 2026 quarter. But it also identified significant opportunity to bring more NTC consumers and NTC commercial entities into the formal credit fold.<\/p>\n<p>Women, youngsters, non-metro regions drive growth<\/p>\n<p>Further, the study noted that the widening of <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/india\/formal-credit-gap-driving-fintech-credit-growth-11600141041110.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"formal credit access\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">formal credit access<\/a> was accompanied by a change in the composition of India\u2019s credit-active population.<\/p>\n<p>Women borrowers increased their share from 22% in March 2017 to 30% in March 2026. Among them, the share of women with over five years of retail credit experience increased from 29% to 43%, while semi-urban and rural credit-active women consumers went up to 64% in March 2026, compared to 57% in March 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen are clearly becoming more financially aware, engaged, and driving sustainable <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/topic\/financial-inclusion\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"inclusion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">inclusion<\/a>. Thanks to digitisation and heightened credit awareness, credit maturity among women borrowers has been impressive,&#8221; according to Jain.<\/p>\n<p>Young borrowers rose from 33% to 39% in the same period. In this category, young consumers from semi-urban and rural regions in particular increased their share from 47% to 61%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/loan-growth-among-young-borrowers-slows-to-6-per-cent-in-june-quarter-cibil-report-11758791570928.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"younger borrowers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">younger borrowers<\/a>, mobile phones rather than two-wheelers and vehicles appear to be products of choice, as this mobile phone-native generation sees them as productivity tools,\u201d Jain added.<\/p>\n<p>State-wise: UP, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Bengal see riseA state-wise analysis of credit uptake reveals that growth in northern and central India has outpaced that of western and southern India between 2017 and 2026.<a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/india\/maharashtra-bans-sale-distribution-of-junk-food-items-in-and-around-schools-across-state-warns-strict-action-details-11785389774412.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Maharashtra\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Maharashtra <\/a>and Tamil Nadu, seen as traditional strongholds of credit uptake, remained among the country\u2019s largest credit markets, although their respective shares moderated from 12% to 10% and from 11% to 9%.On the other hand, <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/opinion\/online-views\/employed-women-uttar-pradesh-self-employed-upliftment-dairy-service-sector-jobs-labour-11782819252940.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Uttar Pradesh\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Uttar Pradesh<\/a> increased its contribution from 8% in March 2017 to 11% in March 2026, Madhya Pradesh rose from 4% to 6%, Bihar from 3% to 5%, and West Bengal from 4% to 5%.<\/p>\n<p>Disclaimer: This story is for educational purposes only.
