Coronation Street’s Cassie Plummer makes her emotional exit<\/a> from the soap next week, after a tumultuous three years on the cobbles. But as Cassie finally bids farewell to Weatherfield, one character is noticeably missing from the action.<\/p>\n

In upcoming episodes, Cassie realises her attempts to get rid of Ross Wilkes have completely backfired<\/a>, making her an outcast in her own family. With Tyrone Dobbs taking his dad’s side and her relationship with Steve McDonald over, Cassie decides there’s nothing left for her on the street.<\/p>\n

The doting grandma shares a heartfelt goodbye with the kids and heads off to the precinct so she and Steve can part on good terms. When Ross turns up, Cassie accepts his offer of a lift, hoping to get him to reveal his true colours.<\/p>\n

However, he locks the doors and speeds off with her in tow – later returning on his own with a story that doesn’t quite add up. What did he do to Cassie<\/a>? <\/p>\n

Speaking about her exit scenes, Claire Sweeney, who plays Cassie, explained that they weren’t filmed chronologically, meaning her final on-screen appearance “didn’t feel like a true ending”. <\/p>\n

“It’s funny because my very last scene\u2014the one where I’m driving away\u2014was actually filmed two or three weeks before I finished. Because of that, it didn’t feel like a true ending,” she said. “For me, the final scene in the Dobbs house felt like the real goodbye because that\u2019s where I started with Alan, Jenny and the kids.”<\/p>\n

The star addressed the fact that Cassie’s mum Evelyn wasn’t present for her exit, saying: “I missed Maureen Lipman so much; I would have loved for her to have been there for that.”<\/p>\n

Despite this, Sweeney described her final storyline as “beautiful”, praising the writing team and her “brilliant” co-star Ian Burfield (who plays Ross). <\/p>\n

“The scenes we shot were so poignant. There was one specific scene at the end, saying goodbye to Hope and Ruby in the Dobbs house, where I literally sobbed. The tears were completely real. <\/p>\n

“At one point, the director even asked me to hold back a little bit because it looked like I was having a breakdown on camera, but that was just how it felt. It was so genuine that the children started crying during the take, too. It was incredibly emotional.” <\/p>\n

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX<\/a>.<\/p>\n
