Emmerdale fans should brace themselves for one of the biggest storylines of the year as Patsy Kensit reprises her role as Sadie King<\/a> in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

20 years on from her last appearance in the village, Sadie is heading back to cause havoc<\/a> for many of the show’s best-loved characters \u2013 including some that she’s never interacted with before.<\/p>\n

Show bosses officially announced Patsy’s return two months ago and viewers have been eagerly awaiting further details ever since.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, Patsy and Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw were finally ready to spill the beans when Digital Spy paid a visit to the soap’s set in Leeds recently \u2013 read on for the biggest revelations!<\/p>\n

1. Sadie’s return fits in with another planned story\"patsy<\/p>\n

Sadie’s name first cropped up in an Emmerdale story conference while the show’s team were discussing another planned plot.<\/p>\n

The idea of a comeback went down so well that producers wasted no time before sounding out Patsy to see if she’d be interested in coming back.<\/p>\n

“We’d been talking about a story for quite a while and the right direction to take it in,” says Laura. “Somebody around the table said the words ‘Sadie King’ \u2013 and there was an audible gasp around the table!<\/p>\n

“I just knew then that we had to have Sadie back. I think I was on the phone to Patsy’s agent within an hour of somebody mentioning her name! I mean, it’s Sadie King \u2013 what an amazing soap character that she is. She’s so feisty and ambitious, so we just had to have her back straight away.”<\/p>\n

2. She’s here for the rest of the year\"patsy<\/p>\n

Fans needn’t worry about this being a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it reappearance for Sadie. Show bosses have locked down Patsy to reprise the role for at least a few months.<\/p>\n

“I really loved playing Sadie 20 years ago when I was on the show,” reveals Patsy. “I had such fun with her and the writing was so good. We just created this absolute monster, who caused such havoc! Then I went on to do other things, but she’s always been one of the favourite roles that I’ve ever had.<\/p>\n

“I’m pathologically polite as a person and Sadie just isn’t. Some of the things I get to say and the put-downs she comes up with \u2013 I used to live vicariously through her because I would never, ever talk to anybody like that.<\/p>\n

“It was a hard yes from me. I said: ‘Absolutely, what’s your plan?’ I came up to meet with Laura and it was wonderful. I’ve got a few months now, and it’s delicious what I get to do. I can’t say much, but I’m here till December, so there’s loads and loads that we can get you to hopefully enjoy.”<\/p>\n

3. It’s not the same old Sadie\"patsy<\/p>\n

When soap bosses bring back a memorable character, the temptation can be to exaggerate some of the biggest qualities they were known for back in the day.<\/p>\n

However, while Sadie certainly hasn’t lost her ruthless edge and she’ll be playing games once she’s back, the team are determined to avoid a one-dimensional portrayal.<\/p>\n

“We all know the amazing character that Sadie was back then, and of course we wanted that same character back,” notes Laura. “But it’s important to remember this is Sadie King 20 years later. She’s been away from the village and there’s a lot that’s gone on.<\/p>\n

“So when she comes back, she initially presents that she’s the same Sadie King that she always was. But as the story develops, you’ll see a slightly different Sadie. We’ll see how the last 20 years has changed her a little bit. Maybe we’ll see more of the vulnerable side that we didn’t see when she was last in the show.”<\/p>\n

“I think it’s really smart what Laura and the writers have done,” adds Patsy. “It would just be one-dimensional and you can’t just have those really over-the-top scenes and emotions \u2013 we want to find out about the real person. That’s really interesting for me to play and for the audience to see where she is in her life.<\/p>\n

“It’s 20 years since she last appeared. I’m 58 now \u2013 I’m nearly 60. So what does this woman really have and what does she value? Does she even have any values? I think that’s interesting to explore as a woman, with the things that we go through in life \u2013 going through the change and all of that stuff.<\/p>\n

“Sadie is on her own socially. Does she have brothers, sisters, a father, a mother? Or she was probably birthed by a jackal! There’s a pretty bittersweet side to her and it’d be nice if that maybe came through. But she’s still a cow!”<\/p>\n

4. Sadie and Kim will interact\"kim<\/p>\n

Despite both being such memorable schemers and having close links to Home Farm, Sadie has never crossed paths with Kim Tate on screen.<\/p>\n

That’ll soon change, though, as Patsy has confirmed that she’s already been busy filming with Claire King, who plays Kim.<\/p>\n

“I got to do some scenes with Claire King the other day and we took it old school,” laughs Patsy.<\/p>\n

“Sadie is a complete chameleon and she always ends up upsetting everyone somehow, but then she makes out: ‘I didn’t mean to do that, oh my God!'”<\/p>\n

5. There are new friendships for Sadie\"kev,<\/p>\n

Many of the village’s long-standing residents will be furious to see Sadie back. But some newer arrivals may be taken in by her charming demeanour\u2026<\/p>\n

“I’m not sure that everybody is going to welcome Sadie back with open arms,” warns Laura. “In fact, I think it’s probably quite the opposite \u2013 but what you’ll see is there are quite a few residents who don’t know the Sadie of old.<\/p>\n

“That opens up maybe one or two new surprising friendships for Sadie. Whether those people are right to trust Sadie or not, is a different matter and we’ll have to see what happens there.”<\/p>\n

Patsy has mentioned interacting on set with co-stars Bradley Riches and Chris Coghill, but it’s unclear at the moment whether Lewis and Kev will be among her new allies in the village! <\/p>\n

6. And more humour\u2026\"emmerdale<\/p>\n

Amid all the rows and recriminations, fans can also expect funnier moments from Sadie second time around.<\/p>\n

“I laugh when I’m reading the scripts,” grins Patsy. “I’ve found this time in the writing that Sadie is quite funny, really. The humour is really there and I’ve discovered that more this time. I don’t know if it’s age and wisdom, maybe she’s got better or maybe she’s got worse!<\/p>\n

“She’s naughty, she’s deceitful. She’s just delicious and I’m proud to have been allowed to create this character and for her be so well loved.”<\/p>\n

7. A massive bombshell is on the way\"nicola<\/p>\n

Last week, Emmerdale teased<\/a> that Sadie is coming back with a secret \u2013 and the ramifications are sounding pretty explosive.<\/p>\n

“It’s Sadie King \u2013 of course she’s coming back with an agenda,” confirms Laura. “I can’t say too much more, but the reason that Sadie comes back, and the secret she comes back with, is going to be absolutely shocking.<\/p>\n

“It’s whether everything is quite as it seems \u2013 we will see as the story progresses. But it’s going to be pretty big and pretty shocking.”<\/p>\n

Could this shake up the King family, who’ve been tipped to be closely involved with Sadie’s comeback?<\/p>\n

8. Sadie’s links with Robert and Cain will be revisited\"robert<\/p>\n

Sadie once had a chaotic romantic connection with Cain Dingle, and she also had an affair with Robert Sugden back in the day. We have a feeling that both will be shocked to see her…<\/p>\n

“There are characters that Sadie had relationships with \u2013 people like Robert and Cain,” points out Laura. “It’s going to be really interesting to revisit some of those stories. We’ll be able to see how what happened 20 years ago still affects what we play now.<\/p>\n

“We’ll pick up on those stories and it’ll still affect how the relationships work now.”<\/p>\n

“Robert Sugden and Sadie come into cahoots,” adds Patsy. “Back in the day, Sadie had an affair with him when he was in his teens! I remember at the time that I had sons and I was like: ‘Oh my God, this isn’t appropriate!’ <\/p>\n

“But Karl Davies, who played Robert back then, was just so professional and wonderful. So Sadie and Robert reconnect when I come back over some things. And Ryan is really funny.”<\/p>\n

9. There are callbacks to the past\"jimmy<\/p>\n

Sadie’s original time in the village coincided with an explosive period of storytelling for Emmerdale, with several big moments hitting the screens which have since become iconic. So it’s no surprise that some of them will soon be revisited\u2026<\/p>\n

“For me, some of those stories from 20 years ago \u2013 like the Kings’ house collapse, and Cain going off in the seaplane with two and a half million dollars \u2013 are some of the most iconic stories in Emmerdale’s history that I absolutely love,” reveals Laura.<\/p>\n

“So we’re picking up on those stories, almost where we left off, and bringing it back in the present. We’ll make sure that whatever we do now picks up on all that. So for me, it’s a producer’s dream.”<\/p>\n

10. Expect some violent showdowns\"chas<\/p>\n

Continuing the old school vibe, there are some dramatic slap scenes on the way as Sadie’s games put her at odds with some of the established villagers. Could Chas and Charity be among those who lash out?<\/p>\n

“I get slapped to shit on the show!” laughs Patsy. “I’m sorry about my language. I was talking to Laura yesterday and said ‘not another one!’ But I don’t want to give too much away. You won’t be disappointed.”<\/p>\n

11. Romance could be on the cards\"male<\/p>\n

Emmerdale is lining up some romantic storylines for Sadie too \u2013 and it sounds like she might have more than one villager competing for her attention.<\/p>\n

“Sadie plays with people and manoeuvres it to get potential partners questioning each other,” warns Patsy. “She pits people against each other. In possible romance situations, she tends to want to make one of them jealous! It’s definitely manipulative.”<\/p>\n

12. It all kicks off with a dramatic arrival\"emmerdale\"<\/p>\n

Sadie’s first ever scene in 2004 saw her turn up in the village in a helicopter, making an instant impression on the locals! And arriving in style could turn out to be a pattern\u2026<\/p>\n

“We’ve definitely tried to bring Sadie back in a scenario that’s every way as dramatic as the way she turned up last time!” promises Laura. “Her arrival will be every bit as amazing and brilliant as the first time around.<\/p>\n

“Probably the most shocking thing afterwards is the reason that brings her back in the first place. It’s undoubtedly one of the biggest secrets we’ve ever had within the King family \u2013 and it’s definitely going to be explosive\u2026”<\/p>\n
